Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • The employee must meet Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • The employee must hold all appropriate state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • The employee must successfully complete the organization's dialysis training program and CPR certification.
  • The employee must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting, moving patients, assisting with ambulation, prolonged standing, bending, and lifting or lowering solutions up to 40 pounds.
  • The employee must complete the Ishihara Color Blindness test as a condition of employment; failure does not preclude employment if reasonable accommodation is available.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and in compliance with organizational, state, and federal requirements.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines, including programming ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, ultrafiltration modeling, safety alarms, and solution delivery systems.
  • Welcome assigned patients, assess their wellbeing, obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weights, and evaluate patients before discharge.
  • Evaluate vascular access, perform cannulation, administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law, monitor access pressures, obtain hemostasis, and apply dressings.
  • Initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Evaluate and intervene in intradialytic problems as prescribed or directed, monitor patient responses, and report significant changes or unusual findings to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Record treatment parameters, vital signs, weights, interventions, patient responses, and other treatment information accurately and timely in the required records and clinical application.
  • Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks according to facility policy.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory testing, collect and prepare specimens, label and store samples, prepare requisitions, and coordinate collection by the laboratory courier.
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and use supplies and equipment efficiently, including ordering and inventory support for the Transitional Care Unit.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff under the supervision of a nurse.
  • Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement activities and infection-control audits and reinforce infection-control practices and education for patients and families under appropriate direction.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education about treatment, disease processes, vascular access, home dialysis products, benefits, and treatment options, including demonstrating peritoneal dialysis setup.
  • Coordinate with appropriate staff to ensure patients receive the planned services and assist with transitions to their chosen dialysis modality.
  • Prepare initial patient charts, compile paperwork, review treatment sheets for completeness, and ensure required signatures and corrections are completed.
