Floating data centers: Samsung wants to take data centers to the sea. The growing demand for digital infrastructure to support artificial intelligence (AI) is pushing big tech companies toward increasingly creative solutions. Samsung Heavy Industries wants to move data centers from land to the ocean. The explosion of generative AI has brought with it a logistical infrastructure problem. Space, energy, and cooling are the three major obstacles for traditional onshore data centers. That's why Samsung Heavy Industries, the shipbuilding division of Samsung Group, believes it has found an answer: floating data centers (FDCs) - data centers installed on vessels at sea. The project gained traction at Posidonia 2026, the world's largest maritime exhibition held in Athens, where Samsung Heavy Industries signed an agreement with Greek Capital Clean Energy Carriers Corp and Lloyd's Register. The concept is simple in theory but complex in execution: build ships from scratch specifically designed to house data center infrastructure, something different from what others are attempting. How it works and what sets it apart from other projects. While Hitachi, in partnership with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, is converting existing ships into repurposed data center platforms, Samsung is betting on building vessels from scratch specifically designed for this purpose. The 50 MW FDC model that the company developed has already received approval from the American Bureau of Shipping and Lloyd's Register, which confirmed the technical feasibility of the design, including structural integrity and the integration of onboard power generation systems. One of the big advantages of these floating data centers is cooling. Seawater is pumped through a closed-loop heat exchange system, where it absorbs heat generated by the servers and returns it to the ocean without any direct contact with the computer equipment. This mechanism eliminates freshwater consumption and can reduce energy consumption for cooling by 40 to 60 percent compared to conventional air conditioning systems. In addition to the agreement with Capital Clean Energy and Lloyd's Register, Samsung Heavy Industries also signed an agreement with Supermicro, a US specialist in AI servers, to develop server configurations adapted to the marine environment. More recently, it also teamed up with Mousterian Corporation, a Dallas-based company specializing in floating and 'adjacent to water' data center infrastructure. Challenges still pending. Turning a data center into a maritime vessel is no easy task. The partnership with Capital Clean Energy therefore serves to validate the concept with real prototypes, testing potential problems related to humidity, salinity, vibrations, and workload reliability in a maritime environment. Practical issues that remain open include the construction cost of a 50 MW unit, the timeframe from contract to operation, and which coastal markets Samsung and Capital will target first. What is certain is that Samsung is assembling piece by piece the entire commercial structure needed to launch this product - namely certification, technology, market analysis, and hardware adapted to the sea - before building a single ship. If the floating data center model proves viable, some of Samsung's structures could one day be installed somewhere in the ocean.

Super Micro Computer Inc. (NASDAQ:SMCI) shares have declined 36% over the past year and 24% year-to-date, validating Jim Cramer's January warning to sell stocks with accounting irregularities. Since his comments on Mad Money, the stock has fallen 24%. The AI server manufacturer faced multiple setbacks, including missing revenue and earnings estimates in August when it reported $5.76 billion in revenue against expectations of $5.89 billion. The stock plunged 33% on 20 March after the company's co-founder was charged with smuggling AI hardware to China. Cramer had stated on 14 January that accounting irregularities warrant immediate selling, calling it one of his most profitable rules. The stock's subsequent performance has vindicated his cautionary stance on the controversial AI manufacturer.
