Requirements

Responsibilities
  • Managing the daily needs of the inpatient services including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, discussion of management options, patient, family, healthcare provider education, health promotion, care coordination, and aiding in disposition and/or transfer of patients from the inpatient neurosurgical unit
  • Displaying an advanced level of clinical knowledge and exceptional communication skills
  • Documenting and recording progress notes and notifying attending physician of significant problems
  • Developing plans of care
  • Intervening in crisis situations or patient deterioration; providing routine and illness care
  • Providing comprehensive pre- and post-operative education and counseling to patients
  • Coordinating preoperative evaluations as needed
  • Maintaining continuity of care through post-operative follow up visits; responding to calls; educating, screening and counseling patients, facilitating patient referrals to appropriate providers and outpatient services
  • Maintaining patient medical records
  • Developing policies/procedures; participating in or designing changes in the system of care delivery
  • Participating in medical student, resident, and health professional teaching; acting as a clinical consultant to peers and other health care professionals
  • Performing all other nurse practitioner duties as required
  • Reviewing patient test results and responding appropriately
  • Handling telephone calls from patients, family members, referring physicians, and hospitals
  • Assisting the physician in the hospital occasionally when needed
  • Providing follow up patient visits and seeing patients independently when indicated
  • Completing thorough history and physical examinations, providing a detailed and accurate history, examining and treating patients, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests and imaging studies; formulating diagnoses and treatment plans and prescribing medications and monitoring responses to medications and adjusting accordingly
  • Analyzing and interpreting patients' histories, symptoms, physical findings, or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses
  • Prescribing medication dosages, routes, and frequencies based on patients' characteristics such as age and gender
  • Ordering, performing, or interpreting the results of diagnostic tests such as complete blood counts (CBCs), electrocardiograms (EKGs), and radiographs (x-rays)
  • Developing treatment plans based on scientific rationale, standards of care, and professional practice guidelines
  • Counseling patients about drug regimens and possible side effects or interactions with other substances such as food supplements, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, and herbal remedies
  • Recommending interventions to modify behavior associated with health risks, and educating patients about self-management of acute or chronic illnesses, tailoring instructions to patients' individual circumstances
  • Providing basic life support/cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of life threatening emergencies
  • Documenting all pertinent patient data in the medical record and collaborating with other health care professionals in meeting patients’ health needs
  • Adhering to and following guidelines and standards of practice of the organization governing Nurse Practitioner
