Requirements
  • Civic SciTech Trainees must be able to operate a motor vehicle as part of job duties and possess a valid driver's license; successful completion of background checks in accordance with university policies; ability to work up to twenty hours per month in a remote setting; candidates should have exceptional written communication and data visualization skills and be able to communicate with non-scientific audiences; candidates should be able to work well independently and in a team environment.
Responsibilities
  • Civic SciTech Trainees will regularly access and review data to ensure that data being collected is consistent and troubleshoot any issues or provide additional recommendations to improve data collection as necessary.
  • Civic SciTech Trainees will analyze the collected data to identify patterns, disparities, and priority areas. They will provide guidance to youth to interpret findings, connect results to their lived experiences, and understand implications for public health and other issues. Then, youth will be guided to identify specific next steps that could include additional data collection or specific programs, projects, or policies that Allentown and Easton can consider for implementation or partnership.
  • At the conclusion of the project, Civic SciTech Trainees will work with City staff from Allentown and Easton to complete a toolkit to outline how the project was completed, lessons learned, and considerations for future iterations so this project could be easily replicated in other municipalities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Graduate students are preferred; however, upper level undergraduate applicants will be considered.
  • Experience working with air quality data and/or geographic information systems, or ability and willingness to learn independently.
  • Strong candidates will have interest in environmental science, sustainability, public health, or a related field; interest in furthering equitable health outcomes and innovative public engagement techniques is a plus.
