Requirements
  • Fluency in English and German.
  • Knowledge of German customs, culture, and language.
  • At least one year of recent work or volunteer experience in Family Service Programs or German tourism.
  • Ability to provide orientation, information, and guidance about life in Germany to newcomers.
  • At least one year of experience conducting briefings and trainings, preparing formal and informal correspondence, memoranda, and reports, collecting data, and creating lesson plans for classes.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Access, the internet, and email.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evening language classes.
Responsibilities
  • Conduct weekly Host Nation Orientation briefings for newcomers and assist with room setup, breakdown, registration, and preparation.
  • Conduct Host Nation Orientation briefings twice weekly during the June-through-August permanent-change-of-station period, as coordinated with the In-processing Transition Center.
  • Conduct walking tours explaining area information, cultural differences, public transportation, restaurant culture, menu reading, ordering, and tipping.
  • Present three cultural adaptation walking tours per month covering transportation tickets and schedules, local day trips within a 50-kilometer radius, restaurants, and access to recreational and leisure centers.
  • Confirm dates, times, and locations for classes, trainings, briefings, and orientations with participants and agencies, and notify them of cancellations before close of business on the preceding day.
  • Provide an in-house or virtual walking-tour presentation using government-approved virtual communication platforms, or provide an alternative date, when weather prevents the walking tour.
  • Maintain knowledge of Host Nation information, procedures, and requirements needed to provide the services.
  • Provide basic conversational German classes, including daytime and evening sessions, in eight-session courses.
  • Provide beginner English-as-a-Second-Language classes twice weekly in eight-week courses.
  • Answer Host Nation questions by email or telephone when not training, teaching, or conducting tours.
  • Provide unofficial German-to-English and English-to-German translation services for rental housing information, newspaper advertisements, transportation schedules, and agency contacts.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with United States Army Regulations is highly desirable but not required.
