Satellite broadband to tackle railway connectivity not-spots. CGI has received £428,000 for its Satellites for Digitalisation of Railways, or SODOR, project. A ScotRail train operating on the West Highland Line will be fitted with satellite communications equipment to test whether broadband can be maintained through areas where terrestrial mobile coverage is limited or unavailable. The trial forms part of government work towards introducing satellite connectivity on mainland trains, to improve both availability and connection speeds for passengers. For satellite communications companies, transport represents a potentially significant market precisely because mobile networks struggle to provide uninterrupted coverage across remote routes. Satellite-connected sensors could bring precision farming to remote areas. The same problem exists across large parts of rural Britain. Farmer Charlie has been awarded £199,000 to develop its GAUFF sensor, a low-cost system designed to monitor crops, soil and local environmental conditions. The devices will switch between satellite and terrestrial mobile connectivity, allowing farmers to access real-time data even in areas with poor or non-existent conventional internet coverage. The company expects the technology to help growers make better-informed decisions, improve productivity and reduce waste, with the government saying it could become available by the end of summer 2027. Lacuna Space is tackling a related challenge with £429,000 to develop a new generation of small, affordable satellite-connected devices for sensors and other Internet of Things applications. The project will also manufacture the equipment in the UK. UK funding backs faster satellite and optical communications. The funding stretches well beyond rural connectivity. Exobotics has secured the largest individual award, £2.1 million, for its STARS project with Archangel Lightworks and the University of Nottingham. The project will develop optical communications capable of moving mission-critical data rapidly between satellites and the ground, while delivering the first satellites for a proposed future data-relay network. Archangel Lightworks is separately receiving £1.845 million for Optimus, a laser communications system designed to transmit data at more than 100 gigabits per second, around ten times faster than its predecessor. Other projects are developing cheaper optical ground stations, more powerful laser communications and digital ground infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly flexible satellite networks. Satellite technology prepares for 5G, 6G and deep-space communications. Another strand of the programme is focused on making satellites and terrestrial networks work more closely together. Aalyria Technologies is developing software that will allow users to move between conventional mobile coverage and satellite networks while remaining connected, with AI also being used to reduce interference between satellites for future 5G and 6G services. Airbus Defence and Space UK, meanwhile, has received £1.5 million for technology allowing satellite processor functions to be reprogrammed and updated after launch rather than remaining fixed for the life of the spacecraft. At the furthest end of the communications challenge, projects involving BAE Systems, Aalyria and Goonhilly Earth Station are looking at technology needed to communicate reliably with lunar and deep-space missions. Taken together, the 16 projects show satellite communications moving beyond the traditional idea of simply connecting spacecraft to the ground. For passengers travelling through a Scottish valley or a farmer working beyond the reach of a mobile mast, the more immediate promise is simpler: fewer places where being connected is no longer an option.
Aalyria, an aerospace communications company, has signed an agreement to use a new Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The facility is funded by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU), with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Regional Industrial Development Corporation as co-investors. The secure facility will enable Aalyria to handle classified government programmes from its Pittsburgh operation and expand its local workforce. Pittsburgh offers access to robotics, AI, and engineering talent from institutions like Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Aalyria's Spacetime platform orchestrates communications networks across land, sea, air, and space in real time. The company works with DIU, the US Space Force, NASA, and other federal agencies. The Pittsburgh SCIF allows Aalyria to conduct classified work closer to its regional engineering teams.
Aalyria names co-founder brian Barritt CEO to advance product growth strategy. July 2, 2026 Dr. Brian Barritt Aalyria Technologies has appointed co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Dr. Brian Barritt as chief executive officer, completing a planned leadership transition as the networking technology company shifts its focus toward product commercialization and long-term growth. Barritt succeeds Chris Taylor, who has led the company since its founding and is departing alongside former Chief Strategy Officer Donald "Chip" Ashworth Cox III to pursue other opportunities. The leadership change comes as Aalyria expands its portfolio of government and commercial programs and increases its emphasis on bringing its networking technologies to broader markets. As CEO, Barritt will lead the company's next phase of growth while continuing to build on the development of its Spacetime network orchestration platform and Tightbeam laser communications technology. Barritt co-founded Aalyria in 2022 and has served as its chief technology officer since launch. He led the product strategy behind both Spacetime and Tightbeam, helping move the technologies from early concepts to operational deployments supporting mission-critical communications. In his new role, he will focus on scaling those platforms commercially while advancing the company's product roadmap. Arthur Patterson, founder of Accel and an Aalyria seed investor, credited outgoing CEO Chris Taylor with building the company through its early stages, including its Series B financing. Patterson said the board believes Barritt's combination of technical expertise, customer relationships and commercial perspective positions him to lead Aalyria through its next stage of expansion. Before co-founding Aalyria, Barritt led the development of networking technologies at Google, where he worked on systems that evolved into the company's Spacetime platform. He also held leadership positions at Meta and Cisco and worked on NASA's Space Communications and Navigation program, giving him experience across commercial networking, cloud infrastructure and space communications. Barritt said the company's mission has been to create networking technology capable of operating seamlessly across land, sea, air and space. He noted that Aalyria has demonstrated those capabilities through field deployments of Spacetime and Tightbeam and will now prioritize accelerating product innovation alongside commercial execution. Aalyria develops software and communications technologies for high-performance networking in dynamic operating environments. Its portfolio combines AI-powered network orchestration software with laser communications terminals designed to provide secure, resilient connectivity across terrestrial, airborne and space-based networks. The company serves government organizations and commercial satellite operators as demand grows for integrated communications infrastructure capable of supporting increasingly complex multi-domain operations.
Aalyria has been selected by NASA to support enterprise service orchestration for the Space Communications and Navigation Programme, beginning with the Polylingual Experimental Terminal (PExT) mission. The company will deploy its Spacetime platform in NASA's operational cloud environment to provide network scheduling, planning and resource management. PExT, which launched in July 2025, demonstrates spacecraft's ability to seamlessly roam between government and commercial communications networks. Under the contract, Aalyria will deploy Spacetime to NASA's Cloud Hosting platform, provide engineering support for Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and partner with commercial networks to extend scheduling capabilities. The agreement builds on Aalyria's existing NASA relationship, including a contract awarded in October 2024 for a Network Orchestration and Management System study.
SpinLaunch has partnered with Aalyria Technologies to develop infrastructure for its Meridian low-Earth orbit communications constellation. Aalyria will provide technical and commercial support, integrating its Spacetime network orchestration platform into Meridian's architecture. The collaboration focuses on enabling Meridian's fractional ownership model, allowing government, defence and telecommunications customers to operate dedicated portions of the global LEO network whilst maintaining data sovereignty. Spacetime's AI-powered software will dynamically manage the multi-domain network across ground, air and space in real time. Founded in 2014, SpinLaunch introduced Meridian Space in 2025 as a platform to reduce satellite infrastructure deployment costs. Aalyria, built on technology originally developed at Google, provides laser communications terminals and network orchestration software for satellite operators and government missions worldwide.
