Activate Global

Nonprofit accelerates science-to-market commercialization

Overview

Activate Global is a nonprofit that turns scientific discoveries into real-world impact by building a cross-sector ecosystem that supports hard tech innovation. It partners with government, philanthropy, universities, and industry to equip scientists and engineers with resources, training, and a strong community so their work can move from discovery to deployment. The core program, its flagship fellowship, has funded nearly 350 fellows since 2015, helping them launch over 275 companies and attract more than $6.5 billion in follow-on funding, with growing global reach beyond the flagship program. Unlike peers that work in silos, Activate connects researchers with the people and institutions across sectors needed to commercialize technology. The goal is to accelerate the commercialization of scientific breakthroughs and multiply pathways from innovation to impact worldwide.

EELI Technology raises $2M to extract lithium from low-concentration brine

Silicon Valley-based EELI Technology, which focuses on critical minerals and lithium production technologies, has raised $2 million in a pre-seed round led by APY Ventures and İvedik GSYF. The round included participation from Activate, Safar Partners, JLL Foundation, Light Ray Ventures, Wolf Point Capital, E8 Climate Angels, Galata Business Angels, O'Shaughnessy Ventures, California Energy Commission, the US Department of Energy, and the National Science Foundation. Founded in 2023 by Dr Mert Akın, EELI develops modular systems that recover lithium and critical minerals from low-concentration brines and industrial process streams using electrochemistry and advanced materials. The company operates from its Hayward, California facility and claims its chemical-free processes reduce operating costs by up to 80% whilst tripling efficiency. EELI will use the funding to commercialise its technology and build pilot systems for clients in the US, Europe, and Turkey over the next 18 months.

Mandrake Bio raises $1.9M to build AI-designed gene-editing enzymes from scratch

Bengaluru-based biotech startup Mandrake Bio has raised ₹16 crore in pre-seed funding co-led by Activate and Antler, with participation from Spectrum Impact, DeVC, and several angel investors. Founded by Tanay Lohia and Dr Kutubuddin Molla, the company develops programmable gene-editing enzymes from scratch using artificial intelligence and protein design, rather than modifying existing biological structures like CRISPR-Cas9. The startup initially targets agricultural applications, creating compact enzymes to develop climate-resistant crops requiring fewer pesticides and fertilizers. It also plans to serve therapeutic companies through a licensing-based business model. As a pre-revenue company with eight employees, Mandrake Bio will use the funds to validate its first enzymes in laboratory conditions, expand its AI protein-design platform, build compute infrastructure, and recruit specialists across AI and wet-lab research.
