Aepnus Technology

Aepnus Technology

Affordable electrolysis equipment for decarbonizing chemicals.

Overview

Aepnus Technology develops affordable electrolysis equipment to decarbonize the production of key commodity chemicals, enabling domestic, carbon-free manufacturing in the United States. The equipment uses electricity to drive chemical reactions that transform raw materials into usable products, offering a lower-cost, scalable alternative to traditional methods. Its approach focuses on producing materials like lithium and sodium salts, NMC cathodes, and common acids and caustic soda closer to home, reducing dependence on foreign suppliers. The goal is to speed the energy transition by making sustainable chemical production more economical and helping the US lead in domestic industrial decarbonization.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Aepnus raised $8 million in 2024 and added 212 NexT in 2026.
  • New Oakland roles in 2026 signal active scaling, not shutdown.
  • Turkey imports over $150 million of caustic soda annually, creating near-term demand.

What critics are saying

  • Aepnus still relies on pilot-stage validation before commercial deployment in 2026.
  • Customer proof is concentrated in battery and mining partners, exposing revenue to slow procurement.
  • If pilot economics miss parity, incumbents will keep buying conventional chlor-alkali capacity.

What makes Aepnus Technology unique

  • Aepnus electrifies sulfate waste into caustic soda and sulfuric acid, cutting fossil inputs.
  • Its Quebec pilot ran 2,000 hours with Ultium CAM, Nemaska Lithium, and Vale Base Metals.
  • DOE-backed LBNL collaboration validates the electrolysis platform for battery-supply-chain recycling.

Turkish fund 212 NexT backs Aepnus' electrochemical tech to cut $150M caustic soda imports

Turkish deep-tech fund 212 NexT has invested in Aepnus' pre-Series A funding round. The US-headquartered startup, with operations in Canada and Germany, is developing modular electrochemical technology to produce industrial chemicals like caustic soda and sulfuric acid with lower carbon emissions and without hazardous chlorine gas by-products. Co-founded by Lukas Hackl and Bilen Akuzum, Aepnus targets applications across chemicals manufacturing, heavy industry and critical mineral processing. Turkey currently imports over $150 million worth of caustic soda annually, highlighting potential for localised production. 212 NexT Managing Partner Çağlar Urcan said the technology addresses supply constraints and cost volatility in essential chemical production. The funding will support platform development, global scaling, team expansion and strengthening industrial partnerships.
