Akamai reported second-quarter revenue of $1.1 billion, narrowly beating analyst estimates. CEO F. Thomson Leighton attributed growth to AI-driven workloads and enterprise commitments, highlighting a new $600 million, four-year deal with a US technology company for cloud infrastructure. The company also cited security demand, including recent wins such as CrowdStrike, as a key revenue driver. However, operating margin declined to 7.3% from 14.5% year-on-year. During the earnings call, analysts probed GPU capacity constraints and revenue recognition timelines. CFO Edward McGowan explained that large deals typically take six to nine months to translate into recognised revenue. Management noted that initial infrastructure costs can temporarily depress margins before full profitability is achieved.
HSBC has downgraded Akamai Technologies to Hold from Buy and slashed its target price to $123 from $171, citing weaker cloud infrastructure margins and slower long-term growth prospects. The bank cut its 2026 non-GAAP operating profit estimate to $1.144 billion from $1.169 billion and lowered 2027-28 EPS forecasts by 3% to 8%. HSBC now expects Akamai's EPS to grow at an 8.5% compound annual rate from 2026 through 2028, below its 10%-15% forecast for the broader sector. Akamai reported second-quarter revenue of $1.10 billion, up 5.4% year-on-year. However, non-GAAP operating margin fell to 24.6% from 29.6% a year earlier, whilst non-GAAP EPS declined 8.1% to $1.59. HSBC expects Akamai to maintain elevated capital spending, with capex averaging 36% of revenue from 2026 through 2028.
Akamai Technologies secured more than $2.8 billion in multiyear cloud-infrastructure contracts during 2026, but the stock fell 5.5% on Friday as investors focused on weakening profitability. Revenue grew 5% year over year to $1.10 billion. Cloud infrastructure revenue surged 39% to $99 million, while security revenue rose 10% to $604 million. However, the legacy delivery and cloud-applications segment declined 6% to $396 million. GAAP operating income dropped 47% to $80 million, pushing operating margin down to 7%. The company spent $410 million on share buybacks at an average price of $134.54 per share, exceeding its $326 million quarterly operating cash flow. Management guided third-quarter revenue to $1.105 billion-$1.130 billion.
Akamai Technologies reported Q2 2026 revenue of $1.1 billion, up 5.4% year-over-year, exceeding the consensus estimate of $1.09 billion by 0.71%. EPS came in at $1.59, down from $1.73 in the prior-year quarter but beating the $1.58 estimate by 0.63%. Security revenue rose 9.5% to $604.44 million, whilst delivery and other cloud applications grew 23.7% to $395.93 million. However, cloud infrastructure services revenue fell 42.1% to $99.32 million. International revenue reached $549.26 million, up 6.5%, whilst US revenue increased 4.3% to $550.43 million. Shares have declined 3.4% over the past month. The company currently holds a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
Akamai Technologies has launched Akamai Workforce Protector, formerly known as LayerX, a security platform designed for the AI era. The solution secures employee interactions with AI, SaaS, web and private applications in real time, directly at the point of interaction. The platform offers several key capabilities. It provides real-time AI governance to discover "shadow AI" usage and enforce policies within browser sessions. It enables zero-disruption deployment without requiring users to switch browsers or organisations to redesign network architecture. The system also prevents data loss by stopping sensitive information from being uploaded to unauthorised AI models. Workforce Protector integrates with Akamai's existing security infrastructure, which already secures applications, APIs and infrastructure. The platform extends visibility into modern desktop AI applications and emerging AI workflows.
