Ride safely: airbags are becoming standard for motorcyclists.

Ride safely: airbags are becoming standard for motorcyclists. Published on 14.04.2026 Alpinestars TechAir5 airbag and Plasma back protector Photo: AlpineStars Motorcyclist safety has taken a major step forward with the arrival of smart airbags. After helmets, they are now recognised as the most effective piece of equipment for reducing serious injuries. Discover this innovation at XCrossroads in Gridx, Wickrange. Technological innovation is redefining safety standards in the world of motorcycling. The motorcycle airbag is now establishing itself as an essential piece of equipment. Already regarded as the most effective form of protection after the helmet, it significantly reduces the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident, particularly when combined with protective elements featuring plasma technology. "We are witnessing a genuine paradigm shift," says Fabio Tinoco, managing director of XCrossroads. "Airbags are no longer the preserve of an elite few or the world of motor racing. They are becoming accessible and essential for all motorcyclists." The principle is simple and effective: whether worn as a standalone vest or integrated into a jacket, the airbag inflates in a matter of milliseconds in the event of a collision or a fall. It immediately protects vital areas - the neck, chest, back and abdomen - by absorbing the impact and minimising internal injuries. Two technologies coexist today. Mechanical systems, connected to the motorbike by a cable, are triggered when the rider is thrown from the bike. Reliable and more affordable, they are a tried-and-tested solution. But the real breakthrough comes from electronic airbags. "These models offer unrivalled accuracy and speed," explains Matthieu Degrave, sales manager at XCrossroads. "Using sensors such as gyroscopes and accelerometers, they continuously analyse the rider's movements and can detect both a fall and a head-on collision." Already mandatory in racing, these systems are gradually becoming the norm on the road. They meet a growing demand from motorcyclists keen to improve their safety without compromising on comfort. Among the leading products on the market, Alpinestars' Tech-Air(R) airbags - notably the Tech-Air(R) 3 and Tech-Air(R) 5 models - exemplify this development. Designed for everyday use, they combine a low-profile design, long battery life and optimal protection, with ultra-fast deployment without the need for a connection to the motorbike. "What makes it so appealing is its simplicity," adds Fabio Tinoco. "The airbag is worn just like a standard piece of clothing, operates independently and is suitable for all types of riding, whether cross, enduro or road." In Luxembourg, this equipment is available at XCrossroads, part of GRIDX, where motorcyclists can receive personalised advice. "Our aim is clear: to make this equipment widely available," concludes Matthieu Degrave. "The more widely it is adopted, the greater the reduction in the impact of accidents. Today, driving with an airbag is a responsible choice." As their adoption gains momentum, motorcycle airbags are emerging as a major development, set to become a safety standard. ALPINESTARS REVOLUTIONIZES THE FUTURE OF MOTOCROSS SAFETY WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE TECH-AIR(R) MX AIRBAG SYSTEM

Alpinestars revolutionizes the future of motocross safety with the launch of the TECH-AIR(R) MX AIRBAG SYSTEM. Following more than a decade of rigorous product development, continuous testing, and collaboration with top MX and Supercross athletes, Alpinestars introduces the Tech-Air(R) MX Airbag System, a groundbreaking addition to its autonomous Airbag technology lineup. Initially utilized and tested in pre-production form by Alpinestars professional racers, the Tech-Air(R) MX is now available to motocross riders worldwide, ushering in a new era of safety for the sport. TECH-AIR(R) MX AIRBAG SYSTEM Alpinestars has long been a pioneer in airbag protection for motorcycle racing, beginning with the Tech-Air(R) Race System in MotoGP in 2009, built on data collected from road racing since 2003. Continuous advancements, driven by extensive data from Alpinestars' global roster of racers, have propelled the Tech-Air(R) System to new heights. Similarly, the Tech-Air(R) Off-Road System has set the benchmark for protection at the Dakar Rally since 2019, leveraging data acquired from World Rally Championship racers since 2014. For Tech-Air(R) MX, Alpinestars has applied the same meticulous R&D approach, gathering data from AMA Supercross and motocross and FIM MXGP riders since 2016. This data has fueled the development of a sophisticated MX crash detection algorithm capable of rapidly activating airbag protection in the dynamic and unpredictable conditions of motocross, with different type of jumps, ruts, berms, and whoops. The Tech-Air(R) MX provides extensive and effective upper body protection in a compact chest protector that comes with an autonomous Airbag System embedded inside. Designed to be worn as a standard part of a rider's kit, over or under the jersey, the lightweight System ensures convenience without compromising performance. Activating the Tech-Air(R) MX is easy; simply attach the left buckle of the System to the Chest Protector, and an internal magnetic switch will detect the left buckle is closed and automatically turn on and activate the Airbag System. Detaching the left buckle will automatically deactivate and turn off the System. The Tech-Air(R) MX is a fully autonomous, industry-leading Airbag System equipped with six integrated sensors (one triaxial accelerometer and one triaxial gyroscope). These sensors monitor rider movements in real-time, transmitting data to the System's computer every millisecond - 1,000 times per second. Developed and analyzed through thousands of hours of riding and crash data, the System's algorithm precisely determines when to deploy the airbag before an impact or dangerous riding event. When a crash event is detected, the Airbag System deploys within 28 to 37 milliseconds, depending on the chest protector size (small to large). The inflated airbag provides impact absorption equivalent to an 82% reduction in transmitted energy compared to conventional passive chest protectors. The shoulder zones are also protected during deployment, even though in the riding configuration no passive protection elements are present in those areas, allowing full range of motion without restriction under normal riding conditions. This rapid deployment safeguards the rider's shoulders, chest, and back, delivering unparalleled coverage. CUSTOMIZABLE RIDING MODES Tech-Air(R) MX comes preloaded with a dedicated MX Mode optimized for motocross tracks. Additionally, it offers two customizable modes - MY RIDE 1 and MY RIDE 2 - configurable via the Tech-Air(R) App. Riders can select from four riding modes (the default MX mode, or MX RACE, ENDURO, and RALLY) tailored to specific disciplines, each with algorithms fine-tuned for crash detection in varied conditions. Riding Modes can be switched effortlessly using the LED display button or the app, providing flexibility for different riding scenarios. EASY GAS INFLATOR REPLACEMENT The System includes a quick-release cover for easy gas inflator replacement, with certification for up to six deployments before requiring service, assuming no damage to the airbag. TECH-AIR(R) APP AND SYSTEM SOFTWARE UPDATES Bluetooth connectivity enables seamless software updates via the Tech-Air(R) App, which also allows riders to monitor System status, battery life, and ride data through an enhanced Google Maps integration (subject to network coverage). A fully charged battery supports approximately 30 hours of active ride time, with an integrated LED display showing operational status, battery life, and selected Riding Mode. SUPERIOR PROTECTION The Tech-Air(R) MX provides CE L1 passive protection for the chest and back, with CE L1 active protection on the back when the airbag is deployed. Certified to Category II of the 686/89/EEC European PPE Directive and EN1621-4:2013, the System guarantees impact protection within 40 milliseconds to 5 seconds of full-pressure inflation, covering the rider's shoulders, chest, and back. AVAILABILITY The Tech-Air(R) MX Airbag System launches in Europe and international markets on December 11, 2025 - available online at alpinestars.comand at authorized Alpinestars dealers. Here's what MX riders & Factory Team Managers have to say about Tech-Air(R) MX: "Looking at it from the point of view as a team manager, of course you don't want your riders to get hurt, so maximum protection is what you're looking for. Now I'm really happy with the evolution of the airbag and my son, even if he's only racing on national amateur level, will not ride without it, that's for sure." - Joel Smets, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager " "At first, MX Vice Ltd asked its riders to test it and provide feedback to Alpinestars. The product was already very developed when MX Vice Ltd received it, so there were very few comments - they took to it right away.
