Amperesand

Modular solid-state transformers for grid power

Overview

Amperesand designs modular solid-state transformers for grid infrastructure using silicon carbide devices and high-frequency transformers to boost efficiency and shrink size, with digital AI control for smart power management. The systems come in 2, 4, and 6 MW modules that can be combined to meet larger needs and support bidirectional power flow for EV charging, microgrids, data centers, and industrial loads, potentially replacing traditional transformers, switchgear, and UPS. Its differentiators include SiC-based SSTs, proprietary high-frequency transformers, and AI-driven control, backed by a team with NTU R&D roots and leadership from ABB, GE, Siemens, and Vestas. The company aims to accelerate the energy transition by scaling manufacturing and delivering SST deployments, with first deliveries planned for 2025 in the US and Singapore.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The $80M Series A round enables 30MW of commercial deployments in 2026 targeting AI hyperscalers and megawatt EV charging.
  • New Reno manufacturing facility with $2M tax abatements will create 60+ jobs to support U.S. AI infrastructure supply chains.
  • First commercial unit delivery to PSA Singapore in early 2026 validates medium-voltage SST technology for port electrification.

What critics are saying

  • Amperesand lacks independent UL/IEC file numbers and third-party type-test results from KEMA or DEKRA ahead of 2026 ramp, risking project rejection.
  • EPA Clean Ports and Washington Port Electrification grants award immediate work to established EPC contractors before Amperesand's first commercial units in early 2026.
  • The 99.999% uptime claim lacks independent field validation, creating credibility gaps with AI hyperscalers demanding audited reliability data for critical power infrastructure.

What makes Amperesand unique

  • Amperesand replaces traditional transformers with AI-driven solid-state units using silicon carbide for 80% smaller footprint.
  • Its modular MV SST platform cuts installation labor by 50% and accelerates time-to-power by 10x for hyperscale AI data centers.
  • The company offers bidirectional power flow enabling vehicle-to-grid transfer, replacing multiple components like switchgear and UPS with one unit.

Amperesand, Inc. selects Reno for U.S. Manufacturing facility focused on next-generation energy infrastructure.

Amperesand, Inc. selects Reno for U.S. Manufacturing facility focused on next-generation energy infrastructure. For immediate release. Marketing and Communications Specialist [email protected], 775-343-6811 Reno, Nev. (March 17, 2026) - Amperesand, Inc., an energy technology company developing next-generation solid-state transformer systems, has selected Reno for a new U.S.-based manufacturing facility. The project was recently approved for state tax abatements by the Nevada Governor's Office of Economic Development. The operation is expected to create more than 60 new jobs over the next two years with an average hourly wage of $55.50, well above the regional average. Amperesand plans to invest tens of millions of dollars in equipment and operational infrastructure within its first two years and is projected to generate more than $13.8 million in new tax revenue over the 10-year abatement period. The GOED Board approved $2,004,004 in performance-based abatements tied to job creation, wage levels, and capital investment. At the center of the expansion is Amperesand's Medium Voltage Solid State Transformer technology. Unlike traditional transformers that passively convert electrical power, solid-state transformers use advanced power electronics and software controls to actively manage energy flow. This allows large industrial users and AI-driven data centers to connect to power sources more quickly, improve overall energy efficiency, and dynamically adapt to changing demand. The technology also supports integration of renewable energy sources and more resilient grid systems, helping modernize infrastructure while reducing energy losses and physical footprint. By establishing manufacturing in Nevada, Amperesand will produce critical power conversion systems designed to support giga-scale industrial operations and AI infrastructure across the United States and globally. "This project reflects both where the economy is going and how energy systems are evolving," said Taylor Adams, President and CEO of the Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada. "As AI adoption accelerates and electrification expands, demand for efficient, flexible, and more sustainable power infrastructure is increasing. Amperesand is building the systems that make that possible. Their decision to manufacture in Northern Nevada continues to position our region as a frontrunner in the next generation of energy innovation." Brian Dow, CEO of Amperesand, cited Northern Nevada's infrastructure readiness, business climate, and long-term growth trajectory as key factors in the decision. "We were looking for a location that could support advanced manufacturing today and scale with us tomorrow," Dow said. "Northern Nevada offers exceptional advanced manufacturing talent, strong logistics access, available industrial capacity, and a collaborative public-private environment. That combination made Reno the right place to expand our U.S. production footprint." EDAWN represented the project throughout the state approval process, coordinating site selection, workforce data analysis, and infrastructure discussions in preparation for GOED Board approval. Nevada does not offer upfront cash incentives; instead, qualifying companies may receive performance-based tax abatements tied to measurable economic impact. As global energy demand grows and grid systems become more complex, investments like this connect Northern Nevada to the infrastructure powering industrial growth, renewable integration, future-ready jobs, and the expanding AI economy. About EDAWN: The Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada is a 501(c)6 non-profit organization established in 1983 funded primarily by private investors with support from public partners, committed to supporting, growing, and maintaining a vibrant and sustainable economy in Northern Nevada.
