Atlas Data Storage

Atlas Data Storage

DNA-based data storage as a service

Overview

Atlas Data Storage encodes binary data into DNA by mapping data to the four-letter alphabet (A, C, G, T) and stores it as dry powder inside rugged steel capsules. Its core technology, licensed from Twist Bioscience, uses a silicon-based semiconductor platform to miniaturize DNA synthesis and enable massively parallel chemistry on a chip. Data is kept in air-gapped capsules for durability, density, and security, and the company offers storage as a service to enterprises such as hyperscalers and regulated industries. Its first commercial service, Atlas Eon 100, launched in December 2025 for permanent data preservation, aiming to provide long-term, low-maintenance archival storage.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Atlas launched Eon 100 on December 2, 2025, entering commercial archiving.
  • imec invested in Atlas on March 10, 2026, adding chip-development credibility.
  • The $155 million seed round from ARCH, Bezos Expeditions, and In-Q-Tel funds scale-up.

What critics are saying

  • Atlas disclosed no revenue, customer counts, or retention metrics after the December 2025 launch.
  • Terabyte-scale DNA storage remains aspirational; TechRadar reported 2026 prototypes still operate at gigabyte scale.
  • If synthesis and sequencing costs stay high, hyperscalers will reject Atlas before 2027.

What makes Atlas Data Storage unique

  • Atlas licenses Twist's silicon DNA synthesis platform, pairing semiconductor chemistry with storage engineering.
  • Varun Mehta and Bill Banyai combine Nimble Storage and Twist bioscience pedigrees.
  • Eon 100 stores DNA as dry powder in rugged steel capsules, air-gapped.
