August Law

AI-powered legal assistant automating document-intensive tasks

Overview

August Law builds AI tools for the legal sector, with Oliver as its flagship AI-powered assistant that automates tasks like research, review, drafting, and analysis for midsize law firms through a subscription-based platform. Oliver uses a modular AI agent framework that mirrors attorney reasoning, connects to a firm’s internal and external data sources, and provides real-time source citations, deployable on a firm’s network or a private cloud to meet data residency needs. The company differentiates itself by serving underserved midsize firms with configurable workflows aligned to firm playbooks, strong auditability, and flexible deployment that addresses security and residency requirements. Its goal is to improve efficiency in tasks such as due diligence, contract review, and discovery preparation, while expanding its global presence and enabling new fee structures.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • August’s $7 million seed, led by NEA and Pear VC, funded hiring and expansion.
  • Live Assist launched March 2026, adding real-time contradiction detection across testimony and documents.
  • August Academy's free tutorials and $375 monthly self-serve pricing lower adoption barriers.

What critics are saying

  • Thomson Reuters is pushing tabular analysis into CoCounsel, directly attacking August’s core workflow.
  • Harvey and CoCounsel already own larger firms, squeezing August before midsize customers standardize.
  • One hallucinated citation or missed contradiction triggers malpractice claims and kills trust fast.

What makes August Law unique

  • August’s January 2026 self-service launch targets solos and midsize firms without enterprise sales friction.
  • Its workflows integrate SharePoint, iManage, NetDocs, Outlook, and Word, preserving firm context.
  • Model-agnostic deployment on private cloud or customer network suits compliance-heavy legal buyers.

Meritas strengthens its industry leading Legal Tech program with newest collaborator August.

Meritas strengthens its industry leading Legal Tech program with newest collaborator August. March 18, 2026 Meritas, the premier global alliance of independent business law firms, today announced that August has joined its Legal Tech Education Program, further strengthening the fast-growing initiative designed to help member firms leverage technology to optimize efficient, transparent, and responsive service to clients worldwide. August is a legal AI workspace built for modern legal teams. Its platform helps law firms and in-house teams review, analyze, and draft complex legal documents more efficiently by combining AI-assisted workflows with structured, auditable outputs, directly within tools lawyers already use, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, and SharePoint. This approach enables law firms to adopt AI in a governed, practical way while maintaining lawyer oversight and client confidence. "August works across a lawyer's entire workflow, from email to document review to drafting, with context that follows the matter instead of treating each task in isolation," said August co-founder Thomas Bueler-Faudree. "We're providing Meritas member firms with customized tutorials and onboarding that enable legal teams to handle discovery work, due diligence, and how to maintain their standards while working faster." The Meritas Legal Tech Education Program has gained significant momentum and now includes six best-in-class legal technology partners delivering education programming to Meritas member firms. So far in 2026, the program has added three legal tech companies to the program and renewed three original partners to deliver highly curated, custom curriculum exclusively to its member firms. "At its core, the Meritas Legal Tech Education Program exists to benefit Meritas member firm clients," said Marti Phillips, head of legal technology at Meritas. "Clients expect great efficiency, predictability, and transparency from Meritas member firms, along with superior, quality service. By keeping our firms ahead of technology opportunities and equipping them to thoughtfully and responsibly adopt what works best, they deliver faster turnaround, clearer communication, and consistency across matters and jurisdictions." Phillips, a legal tech veteran who joined Meritas in 2025, notes that law firms face challenges when navigating a crowded and rapidly evolving legal tech landscape. The Meritas Legal Tech Education Program significantly reduces risks in legal tech investment and deployment, accelerating tech-driven outcomes. Gained knowledge and mastery enables lawyers to spend less time on administrative and document-heavy tasks and more time focusing on client strategy, priorities, and outcomes. About Meritas Meritas is a global alliance of independent, market-leading law firms that provides legal services to companies looking to effectively capture opportunities and solve issues anywhere in the world. Clients benefit from local knowledge, collective strength and new efficiencies when they work with Meritas law firms. The personal attention and care they experience is part of Meritas' industry-first commitment to the utmost in quality of service and putting client priorities above all else. Founded in 1990, Meritas has member firms in 245 markets worldwide with over 9,300 dedicated, collaborative lawyers. About August August is a legal AI workspace that helps lawyers handle the full spectrum of their work, from drafting and redlining to research and client communication. Unlike tools that solve isolated tasks, August works across a lawyer's entire workflow with context that moves seamlessly between web, email, and documents. The company has raised $7M in funding from New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Pear VC, Afore Capital, Stanford Law School, and executives at OpenAI, Bain Capital Ventures, and Ramp, and serves law firms ranging from solo practitioners to midsize practices. Vlex + Vecflow Comment On Vals Ai Study Results

vLex and startup Vecflow, which were among the companies in the Vals genAI performance study (see here), have sent Artificial Lawyer some comments on the results. The other companies involved in the published study include Harvey and Thomson Reuters. (Note: there are AL TV Product Walk Throughs of Vecflow and vLex to give you some more context – see here.)Below are the verbatim comments from Vecflow and vLex.The link to the full Vals AI report is here.—VecflowAbout the company: ‘Vecflow is a legal AI company built to optimize workflows across the firm including research, due diligence, drafting, and document review. By using your firm’s documents, information, and knowledge, Vecflow delivers customized, one-click workflows – accelerating and improving legal work.’ Note: its main AI tool is named ‘Oliver’. Comment on Vals ResultsVals.ai’s study compares Oliver to four other established offerings: Thomson Reuters, LexisNexis, Harvey, and vLex. The study confirms that Oliver–with only 6 months on the market and far fewer resources than its peers– “often performed on par with or outperformed more established offerings.” This includes companies valued in the billions. The evaluation tested AI legal assistants against human lawyers across seven legal tasks

Meet Oliver, The New Genai Platform For Contract Review + More

This week’s AL TV Walk Through is with Vecflow and its Oliver genAI platform, which covers a range of tasks, from AI contract review and analysis, to deploying playbooks, to drafting, to tapping both internal and external data sources.Taking us through the demo is New York-based co-founder Rutvik Rau. There is then some QA with Artificial Lawyer. Press Play to watch inside the page. VIDEO. AL TV Productions, 2025.—Overall, what Oliver shows is that there are a growing range of legal tech companies that can provide a very broad range of genAI capabilities, often centred around key tasks such as document review, but then branching out in multiple directions to other use cases, such as research and drafting. One might say, ‘have genAI, will provide multiple legal tech use cases’. And in Oliver’s case there is plenty of time to develop many more capabilities, given they only started in the summer of 2023.If you’d like to know more about Oliver and the Vecflow team, you can see their site here
