Avride arrives on U.S. Campuses after Starship left for grocery delivery. It took only one month after Starship Technologies halted autonomous delivery operations at U.S. colleges and universities for robots from Texas-based competitor Avride to start appearing on some of those campuses. Bowling Green State University in Ohio quickly emerged as one of the earliest campus partners to make that shift, welcoming Avride robots to begin navigating potential delivery routes in July. Starship pulled its fleet from the campus shortly after the spring semester concluded following six years of autonomous delivery services, according to the school's student-led publication. Avride's entrance into BGSU came through a master services agreement with Chartwells Higher Education, according to a press release last month. The dining services provider manages foodservice operations at about 350 U.S. campus partners and, until June, offered autonomous delivery through an agreement with Starship. Jon Zachrich, BGSU Dining's director of marketing, communications and technology, considered the change from Starship to Avride as "a major improvement" to the campus's popular autonomous delivery program. "Avride's business model, their design and their integration with Grubhub provide a better system for both BGSU Dining and the people who are using the robots," Zachrich said in a July 26 release from the university, adding the new robots are "safer and smoother." Avride plans to launch delivery services at BGSU Aug. 17, ahead of the coming fall semester. The company anticipates additional launches at campuses across the U.S. through its partnership with Chartwells before year's end. "Technology is most valuable when it solves a real need and makes the campus experience better," Eva Woktalewski, Chartwells Higher Ed CEO, said in a release. "Avride understands the complexities of campus environments, and we look forward to working together to introduce autonomous delivery thoughtfully, in ways that support each university's goals and create meaningful value for its campus community." The Chartwells partnership demonstrates Avride's efforts to further expand into the U.S. campus scene, adding to an existing list of university and college partners that includes The Ohio State University, the University of Arizona, Indiana University Bloomington and Salisbury University. Ohio State represents the firm's largest campus delivery deployment, with more than 100 robots operating daily. "Students expect campus services to be as convenient as the rest of their daily lives, but universities also need solutions that are practical to operate at scale," Dmitry Polishchuk, CEO at Avride, said in a release. "This agreement with Chartwells gives us a strong path to bring Avride robot delivery to more campuses in a way that supports dining teams, improves access for students, and fits naturally into how people move around campus every day." Food rescue has always been about one simple idea: getting perfectly good food to people instead of landfills. How often do you use food delivery apps? New Avride delivery robots are coming to Bowling Green State University for the 2026-27 academic year, bringing expanded delivery options, larger capacity and a globally recognized mobile ordering platform in Grubhub. The partnership will create better integration with BGSU meal plans, Falcon Dollars and BG1 Bucks in addition to accepting credit and debit cards. Through Grubhub, the learning community will have more on-campus options, including mobile ordering at Starbucks using a meal plan. The hatch of the Avride delivery robots is large enough to hold six extra-large (16.5-inch) pizzas and five 1.5-liter bottles at a time, about double the capacity of the previous delivery robots on campus. The machines are operator-friendly and active more than 98% of the time. They also do not gather personal data - their cameras blur faces - their sensors create a 360-degree view and they are equipped with LiDAR, which uses pulsed lasers to create 3D modeling from up to 200 feet away, even without sunlight. "From a capacity standpoint, we can deliver more, which is really nice, and Avride uses an active LiDAR system rather than just sensors, so they are a lot safer and smoother," Zachrich said. "Avride was originally based on autonomous driving, so they were able to take a lot of that technology and create really safe robots. It's a better technology robot, which we're excited about." At first, BGSU will have 30 delivery robots that will limit deliveries to on-campus locations to optimize their efficiency, but the University could expand the operation over time. "We want to make sure the on-campus experience is flawless for our students before we move to the next stop of a possible expansion," Zachrich said. "Grubhub should provide a much better system and app architecture, and the actual robots themselves are larger and safer. These are significantly better from an experiential point of view." Students also will have access to Grubhub Premium when they sign up with their BGSU email address, which will waive delivery fees on eligible orders over $12 and offer a 5% pickup credit. Other deliveries will be a flat fee rather than a percentage, a cost-saving change from prior years. When the fall semester begins, Zachrich said the new platform should seamlessly integrate with life at BGSU. "Across the board, everybody is winning with this partnership," Zachrich said. Has robotaxi begun to scale? Shifting to the delivery sector, Uber made a major move by earmarking approximately €2 billion through 2031 for European expansion, explicitly including autonomous vehicle initiatives alongside its acquisition of Delivery Hero. Meanwhile, Uber's autonomous delivery partner, Avride, launched sidewalk street robot operations in Miami via Uber Eats, having already completed 60,000 trips.
