Beumer and Fraunhofer launch three-year plan to develop mobile robots for logistics. German material handling leaders will test new technologies from the lab in pilot projects with Beumer. Seeking advances in automated logistics solutions, Beumer Group will partner with the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML to launch a joint "Enterprise Lab" to develop a scalable platform for mobile robotics. According to the partners, the format of the research co-operation enables close integration of industry and science: Beumer gains direct access to the latest research results and laboratory facilities, while Fraunhofer experts can work with their new industrial partner to bring specific developments and products to market maturity. For example, under the agreement, new technologies from the lab can be quickly transferred to pilot projects and product improvements at Beumer, ranging from sortation robots for parcel centers to smart baggage transporters for airports. "Instead of setting up an isolated island laboratory, we are using the Fraunhofer 'Enterprise Lab' as a tried and tested format for incorporating external cutting-edge research directly into our product development," Beumer's chief technology officer, Volker Jungbluth, said in a release. "Mobile robotics perfectly complements our product and system portfolio in our core areas of 'Conveying and Sorting' and offers clear technological and economic advantages: flexibly scalable, space-efficient, fail-safe and powerful."
BEUMER Group and Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML launch joint 'Enterprise Lab' for mobile robotics. March 19, 2026 | Posted by LG Content Team Strategic partnership combines cutting-edge research with industrial practice At the end of 2025, BEUMER Group entered into a strategic innovation partnership with Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML. The core of the collaboration is a three-year joint 'Enterprise Lab' for the development of mobile robots. Through this cooperation, intralogistics specialist BEUMER aims to significantly advance its development projects in the field of mobile robotics and secure a technological lead in automated logistics solutions. In the 'Enterprise Lab', scientists from Fraunhofer IML are working side by side with experts from BEUMER Group to develop a scalable platform for mobile robotics (MR). Collaboration The collaboration is taking place at the Fraunhofer IML in Dortmund - in the direct neighbourhood of the BEUMER site there. In addition to the expertise of the scientists involved, Fraunhofer IML is making its research infrastructure, including test areas, available for this purpose. With five full-time positions, Fraunhofer IML will work on the joint research project with BEUMER over the next three years as part of the lab. Together with BEUMER developers, the researchers are forming a powerful team to build a robust platform for mobile robots. Mobile Robotics "Mobile robotics perfectly complements our product and system portfolio in our core areas of 'Conveying and Sorting' and offers clear technological and economic advantages: flexibly scalable, space-efficient, fail-safe and powerful. These are exactly the points that make MR a real lever for transformation in the sortation and logistics environment," explained Volker Jungbluth, Chief Technology Officer, BEUMER Group. "This partnership is broadly based in the field of mobile robotics. We are ambitious to provide the basis for leap innovations in mobile robotics in this cooperation," emphasized Prof. Alice Kirchheim, Institute Director, Fraunhofer IML. The new platform will serve as the technological basis for various applications. The platform will rely on standardised onboard controllers, sensor technology, localisation and fleet management in order to leverage synergies and reduce development costs.
BEUMER Taicang facility: localisation and lead-time impacts for mine conveyors. 30 second briefing. BEUMER Group has opened a new "state-of-the-art" manufacturing facility in Taicang, Jiangsu Province, significantly expanding its Chinese production base for mining and bulk materials handling systems such as overland conveyors, pipe conveyors and high-capacity loading equipment. The plant opening on 10 December 2025 coincides with BEUMER China's 20th anniversary and the group's 90th anniversary, signalling a long-term localisation strategy for key components. For mine operators in Asia, closer regional manufacture should shorten lead times for large conveyor systems and reduce logistics risk on critical spares. Technical brief. * For large overland conveyor projects, regional fabrication reduces cross-border transport of long, heavy truss sections. Our take. Among the 513 Mining stories in our database, very few focus on original equipment manufacturers expanding fabrication capacity in China, so BEUMER China's Taicang facility signals that high-spec bulk-handling systems are increasingly being built closer to Asian project sites rather than exported from Europe. The timing around BEUMER China's 20-year anniversary suggests the group now sees sufficient long-term demand from Chinese and wider Asia - Pacific mining and cement clients to justify deeper localisation of production, which typically shortens lead times for overland conveyors and loading systems on greenfield projects. With many of the 996 Projects/Product-tagged pieces now referencing AI or automation, BEUMER Group's new 'state-of-the-art' plant in Taicang is likely to become the hub for integrating more advanced digital controls and condition monitoring into material-handling equipment destined for Chinese mines and terminals. Geotechnical software for modern teams. Centralise site data, logs, and lab results with GEODB-io, CMRR-io, and HYDROGEO-io. * Save and export unlimited calculations * Advanced data visualisation * Generate professional PDF reports * Cloud storage for all your projects Prepared by collating external sources, AI-assisted tools, and Geomechanics.io's proprietary mining database, then reviewed for technical accuracy & edited by our geotechnical team.
Beumer opens Chinese manufacturing unit. Beumer Group has inaugurated a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Taicang, China, strengthening its global production network and reaffirming its long-term commitment to the Chinese market. The opening coincides with the 20th anniversary of Beumer China and the group's 90th anniversary worldwide. The new facility covers a land area of around 33,350m^2, with approximately 23,000m^2 of manufacturing space across two workshops and supporting infrastructure. Construction was completed in just 12 months, from July 2024 to June 2025, supported by efficient project management and strong cooperation with local authorities. The site is now fully integrated into Beumer's global manufacturing network, enabling more efficient service to customers across China, the Asia-Pacific region and beyond. Two new wholly owned foreign enterprises have also been established in Taicang to support expanded operations. Designed as a modern, digital and sustainable production base, the facility features advanced manufacturing technologies and smart factory principles to enhance efficiency and product quality while minimising environmental impact. Beumer China, established in 2005, has grown into a full-scope operation serving industries including airports, logistics, cement, minerals and mining, with a workforce of around 400.
