Backflip

AI-driven 3D modeling from ideas

Overview

Backflip.ai provides a platform for the 3D design and printing market that uses AI to turn user ideas into ready-to-print 3D models with a single click. It supports creating, assembling, remixing, and sharing designs, and offers printing options in materials such as metal, carbon fiber, and plastic. The product works by letting users input or sketch an idea, which the AI then converts into a 3D model, which can be refined, assembled with other parts, and shared with others; users can print directly from the platform through tiered subscription plans (Free and Pro) that unlock more features. The company differentiates itself through its emphasis on fast, easy creation and collaboration, enabling one-click modeling and streamlined workflows for individuals, designers, and enterprises. Its goal is to help people bring their creative visions to life quickly and efficiently, reducing the time and effort needed to go from concept to printable 3D objects.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • August 4, 2026 launch priced access at $20 monthly, expanding SMB adoption.
  • Backflip says digitizing parts falls from $1,500 to $10, unlocking massive ROI.
  • Early production use at a top automotive manufacturer validates industrial demand and urgency.

What critics are saying

  • Siemens Solid Edge 2026 and Autodesk compete directly with AI copilots inside incumbent workflows.
  • Backflip’s top-automotive-manufacturer proof point lacks named revenue, retention, or contract details.
  • If Fusion, SolidWorks, and Onshape ship native scan-to-CAD, Backflip becomes a feature.

What makes Backflip unique

  • Backflip’s August 4, 2026 CAD copilot turns scans into editable parametric models.
  • Its second-generation geometry model chains CAD operations like engineers, not generic text generation.
  • Fusion add-in plus web app lowers switching costs for shops already using CAD tools.

Backflip AI launches CAD copilot that turns 3D scans into editable models in minutes for $10

Backflip AI has launched an AI copilot for CAD that converts 3D scans and mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models with complete feature trees. The tool is available as an Autodesk Fusion add-in and web application. The copilot reduces reverse-engineering work from hours to minutes, cutting costs from $1,500 per part to roughly $10 — a more than 100-fold reduction. This enables manufacturers to digitise parts economically at scale. The technology is powered by Backflip's second-generation foundation model, trained specifically on 3D geometry and CAD operations. It reconstructs parts by chaining together CAD operations the way human engineers work, producing native CAD models that are immediately editable. The copilot offers two reconstruction modes and includes multimodal AI search for parts libraries. Early customers include a top automotive manufacturer. Pricing starts at $20 monthly, with four free reconstructions for new accounts.

Backflip AI launches AI copilot for CAD.

Backflip AI launches AI copilot for CAD. The AI copilot for CAD is powered by a new foundation model that can convert 3D scans, STLs, and other mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models. Backflip AI has launched its AI copilot for CAD and made it available via its add-in for Autodesk Fusion and as a standalone web application. The AI copilot for CAD is powered by a new foundation model that can convert 3D scans, STLs, and other mesh files into fully editable, parametric CAD models. Backflip has developed the product in an attempt to address the hours of skilled reverse-engineering work that has typically been required to convert physical parts into usable CAD models. This process would also incur high costs, with Backflip estimating a typical cost of $1,500 per part. Now, however, Backflip suggests that users will be able to go from physical part to workable CAD in minutes and for as little as $10. The company expects its AI copilot for CAD to eliminate the reconstruction backlog, multiplying 'what a single CAD engineer can produce' and letting 'anyone with a 3D scan or an STL produce a real, editable CAD model.' Key to the Backflip offering is a second-generation foundation model, built specifically for 3D geometry and trained to construct increasingly complex geometry by 'chaining together' CAD operations like extruding, revolving, and patterning. Parametric models with full feature trees following the order of operations of engineering CAD conventions yield accurate and editable CAD, while the tool can also reconstruct meshes, check its own work, and iterate to improve fidelity and dimensional accuracy. Per Backflip, the AI copilot for CAD excels at moderate-complexity 3-axis CNC milled and turned parts, but the company's focus also extends across 3D printing and other manufacturing methods. "Most frontier models have limited 3D comprehension that emerges more or less as a byproduct of their training on large-scale internet data," said Kairo Morton, Founding Engineer at Backflip. "We built ours with 3D CAD operations as a first-class primitive and trained it to design the way engineers actually do - breaking down a bulk geometry, then rebuilding it feature by feature, operation by operation. The result is the first foundation model whose output you can open in your CAD package and just keep working. Today, that unlocks scan to CAD, and it's the base on which everything we build next stands." Backflip says that the technology is already in use with early customers, including a 'top automotive manufacturer.' Plugins for additional CAD packages are in development and expected to be released later this year.
