Baptist Health opens emergency center at SilverLeaf. The ER joins outpatient services already operating at the medical campus in St. Johns County. * By Sheldon Gardner * | 3:36 p.m. September 22, 2026 * | 2 Free Articles Remaining! * News * Health Care About three months after launching outpatient services at Baptist SilverLeaf Medical Campus, Baptist Health opened its new emergency center Sept. 22 in the St. Johns County healthcare complex. The Baptist & Wolfson Emergency Room is a freestanding facility connected by a walkway to the outpatient building, which opened June 23 on the campus at 8595 St. Johns Parkway. The 23,000-square-foot, 16-room emergency center can serve adults and children, including through professionals with expertise in pediatric medicine. Wolfson Children's Hospital is part of the Baptist Health system and is "the region's only full-service children's hospital and Northeast Florida's only state-designated, American College of Surgeons (ACS)-verified Level I Pediatric Trauma Center," according to Baptist Health. The emergency room includes features designed to help make children more comfortable, including a play space in the waiting area, iPads with games and images of animals on the walls, such as a dog swimming. "The kids are not just little adults. They need special treatment and care," said Tammy Daniel, chief nursing officer for Baptist Health. A helipad is just outside the doors for patients who need to be flown in. "We'll take any patient, take care of anything that comes through our doors," said Kirk Jackson, nurse manager for the SilverLeaf emergency department. "We have the abilities of all of our full-sized emergency departments that are located at the main campuses." Patients needing admission for a hospital stay will typically go to Baptist South or Wolfson Children's Hospital, Jackson said. The campus is about 3 miles north of International Golf Parkway and Tocoi Creek High School. The medical center offers primary care, neurology, orthopedics, rehabilitation services and cardiology care. Free wellness services The campus also provides free services through its wellness center at the SilverLeaf medical office building, including sound baths, health education, menopause care and body composition analysis. Wellness services are available to anyone in the community, regardless of insurance coverage or income. Dr. Ed Gorak, medical director for Baptist Medical Group, said the focus is on helping people live healthier lives, a type of preventative medicine. Wellness coaching topics offered include stress management, physical activity, nutrition, sleep and chronic disease management. Those seeking services can self-enroll online. Serving a growing population Construction cost of the Baptist SilverLeaf Medical Campus was $128.5 million, according to Emily Sharpe, a media and public relations specialist for Baptist Health. The Jacksonville-based architecture, engineering and design firm Gresham Smith designed the 55,000-square-foot building. Christina Stover, director of construction for Baptist Health, said the campus has room to grow on-site, but the company hasn't finalized plans for any expansion. Gorak said the campus was designed to serve a growing population in St. Johns County. According to Baptist Health, about 1.02 million people live within a 30-minute drive of the area. "We wanted to be here right in the community," he said.

Baptist Health names new chief human resources officer. Jacksonville, Florida, USA, August 2026 - Baptist Health has named Denver Mitchell as executive vice president and chief human resources officer (CHRO), effective September 1, 2026. As CHRO, Mitchell will serve as a strategic advisor to the executive leadership team, leading initiatives that strengthen Baptist Health's workforce through talent planning, organizational design, succession planning and leadership development. She will also partner with clinical and operational leaders to anticipate workforce needs, address talent shortages and strengthen talent pipelines through recruitment strategies, workforce planning and strategic external relationships. "Our ability to deliver exceptional care begins with our team members, and Denver will play a vital role in attracting, developing and retaining top talent," said Matthew A. Zuino, MSIS, FACHE, president and CEO of Baptist Health. "She brings extensive health care HR expertise and a proven track record of creating environments where people can do their best work, and we are delighted to welcome her to the Baptist Health family." Mitchell has more than 22 years of experience in human resources, 16 of those within the health care sector. She joins Baptist Health from Cape Fear Valley Health in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where she served as senior vice president and CHRO, leading HR strategy for a health network with eight hospitals and 10,000 team members. She led key HR initiatives that contributed to several organizational honors, including being named a 2025 Well-Being First Champion by the group ALL IN: Well-Being First for Healthcare for supporting health care professionals' mental health; earning a place on U.S. News & World Report's "Best Hospitals" list; and being featured on Becker's Hospital Review's list of hospitals and health systems with exceptional simulation and education programs. She also launched a Human Resources Center of Excellence, created a Leadership Institute that transformed training and mentoring programs and modernized HR operations across the health system. Prior to that role, she directed HR strategy at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida. "I am thrilled to join an organization with such a strong commitment to its workforce and mission," said Mitchell. "I'm looking forward to working alongside colleagues across the health system to strengthen our culture, advance leadership development and support the workforce that makes exceptional patient care possible." Mitchell earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from the University of Alabama and is expected to receive a Master of Business Administration from Fayetteville State University in 2027. She has served as a member of the board of directors, strategic partners for the North Carolina Hospital Association and is a member of several workforce development and health care HR organizations, including the American Society for Healthcare Human Resources Administration and the Society for Human Resource Management.
