Bern's Steak House tops list of Florida's favorite spots for professional celebrations. Brody Wooddell Wed, April 22, 2026 at 1:43 PM PDT A new survey of business leaders named Bern's Steak House as Florida's top place to celebrate promotions, pay raises and other professional milestones. The survey, commissioned by MarketBeat, asked more than 3,000 business leaders where they prefer to mark career wins such as promotions, bonuses and major deals. The Tampa steakhouse ranked first in Florida, followed by The Courtesy in Orlando, River & Post in Jacksonville, Hullabaloo in West Palm Beach and Blackbird Ordinary in Miami. Researchers said promotions and pay raises were the most common reason people chose to celebrate, followed by bonus payouts and closing major business deals. The survey also found that 68% of respondents said they had chosen a more expensive venue specifically to signal success, while 84% said they had spent more than they were comfortable with on a work-related celebration. On average, respondents said they spend about $205 per person when marking a professional achievement. The survey found pride was the most common emotion tied to those celebrations, followed by excitement and relief.
Bern's to replace haven with seafood concept in 2027. Haven will stay open through summer as Bern's prepares a 2027 seafood concept. Bern's Steak House Company will open a new seafood-focused restaurant at the current Haven location at 2208 W. Morrison Ave. in fall 2027, the company announced Thursday. Haven will remain open through the summer. The new restaurant does not yet have a name. Leadership plans to release additional details in phases as planning continues. Executive Chef Chad Johnson developed the concept over several years. The restaurant will center on seafood and reflect his focus on discipline, technique and respect for product. "Over the next few months, we invite guests to continue enjoying Haven," said David Laxer, president of Bern's Steak House Company. "This restaurant has played an important role in our community and, true to its namesake, has served as a haven for culinary stewardship. As a company, we dig deep to learn, source and execute the best techniques and offerings the industry has to offer our guests. That commitment will carry forward into a new concept building on the foundation, lessons and culinary stewardship that have shaped this chapter." The Morrison Avenue address sits a few blocks from Bern's flagship restaurant and anchors the group's presence in the neighborhood. Company leaders said they will support Haven team members through the transition and provide updates as plans advance. The shift gives one of Tampa's most established restaurant groups a defined timeline to introduce a new seafood concept to South Tampa. What Tampa International don't know yet. Bern's Steak House Company has not shared the name of the new restaurant, its menu direction beyond a seafood focus or whether the space will undergo a full redesign. The company has also not announced an opening date, pricing, hours or the date of Haven's final service. Bern's marks 70 years with La Segunda collaboration. Bern's begins its 70th with a La Segunda sandwich and a look back at its Howard Avenue roots. Bern's Steak House has outlasted strip malls, recessions and restaurant trends. This year, it turns 70. The celebration starts with something simple: a steak sandwich. From March 1-7, Bern's is partnering with La Segunda Bakery on a limited-time sandwich that brings two Tampa family businesses together. The sandwich will be available at La Segunda's Ybor City, Kennedy Boulevard and St. Petersburg locations. "It's truly our honor to celebrate alongside La Segunda, another family business that has meant so much to Tampa for generations," said David Laxer, owner and president of Bern's Co. "They share our commitments to tradition and high-quality ingredients, so collaborating on an unforgettable steak sandwich feels like the perfect way to begin our 70th anniversary year." The sandwich is built on La Segunda Cuban bread and layered with truffle sauce, thinly shaved Bern's ribeye, Bern's proprietary cheese blend, caramelized onions and arugula. It echoes the steak sandwiches Bern and Gert Laxer served when they were still building the restaurant themselves. "For more than a century, our bakery has been rooted in tradition and serving Tampa families every day," said Kevin Partridge, chief operating officer of La Segunda Bakery. "Our teams both understand what it means to show up for your community year after year. This sandwich brings together the flavors people grew up with in a way that feels both familiar and special, and we're proud to share that story with Bern's." How a bar became Bern's. In 1956, Bern and Gert Laxer bought the Beer Haven on South Howard Avenue. They cooked, waited tables and washed dishes themselves. To save money, they salvaged letters from the Beer Haven sign and bought an "S" to create the name Bern's. They later added "Steak House" after the phone company would not allow a single-name listing. As the business grew, they purchased neighboring storefronts one by one. The single bar became eight dining rooms and 350 seats. In 1985, they built the Harry Waugh Dessert Room from redwood wine casks, where guests still end the evening. Along the way, Bern Laxer built the wine cellar that helped define the restaurant's national reputation. Bern's says its cellar now includes more than 6,800 selections and more than half a million bottles, and the restaurant has earned Wine Spectator's Grand Award for many years. Today, their son David Laxer leads Bern's and its related ventures, including Haven, Élevage at the Epicurean Hotel, Bern's Fine Wines & Spirits and Bern's Winefest, extending the family's presence across Tampa's dining and wine scene. The anniversary year will include additional collaborations, dinners and barrel releases, which Bern's said will be announced in the coming months. What began as a single bar built letter by letter now spans eight dining rooms, a world-class wine cellar and a third generation of leadership. Bern's Steak House is located at 1208 S. Howard Ave. It is open Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. It is closed on Mondays.
