Boden

Direct-to-consumer clothing retailer via catalogs

Overview

Boden operates as a direct-to-consumer British clothing retailer offering men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel along with accessories and homeware, primarily through its websites and mail-order catalogs, plus a few stores and select third-party retailers. Its product range is organized into seasonal collections at mid-tier prices, focusing on durable, timeless pieces with colorful prints and classic British styling. Its differentiators include personality-driven marketing, emphasis on quality fabrics, sustainable practices (ethical sourcing, carbon-neutral Scope 1 and 2 emissions, and recyclable packaging), and a strong international footprint led by the US as its largest market. Boden aims to grow its global direct-to-consumer business by expanding internationally while maintaining sustainable materials, responsible sourcing, and long-lasting investments for families and individuals.

What believers are saying

  • Boden returned to profit in 2024, posting £26.1m after 2023's £9.4m loss.
  • US sales reached £161.7m in 2024, becoming half of revenue and driving growth.
  • Canada expansion and Birmingham's 2026 opening extend the market playbook beyond online-only growth.

What critics are saying

  • Tariffs on apparel imports squeeze margins as Boden sources product for North American stores.
  • If store productivity stalls before DTC slows, the Canada-and-US rollout destroys capital.

What makes Boden unique

  • Its direct-to-consumer model spans UK, US, EU, and Australia with owned customer data.
  • Bespoke stores reinforce premium positioning while preserving high-margin online traffic and catalog reach.

Boden plots Canada expansion.

Boden plots Canada expansion. British fashion retailer Boden is targeting Canada as its next international market as it ramps up its expansion strategy, Drapers can reveal. Boden Nashville store Speaking exclusively in Drapers' August issue, Boden CEO Ben Dreyer said the next international market the brand is targeting is Canada. This comes amid Boden's ongoing bricks and mortar expansion, following recent openings in Atlanta, Georgia, in November last year, Nashville, Tennessee, in March this year and Birmingham, Alabama, later this autumn. The US is Boden's largest market to date, accounting for half of its total sales. US sales for the year to 28 December 2024 amounted to £161.7m, up from £133.2m in 2023. "The idea is just to build a bit of retail muscle [in the US] - to understand how we can make [bricks and mortar] work, and then if at some point the DTC starts to slow down, you go, 'OK, we know what we can do to roll this out.' So that's the broad strategy," he told Drapers exclusively. "The next international market in Boden's sights is Canada," he added. Boden returned to profitability for the year to 28 December 2024, posting profit of £26.1m, up from a loss of £9.4m in 2023. Boden's full-year group turnover during the period also increased 19% year on year to £362.8m, driven by full-price sales and the "s trongest year to date" for womenswear sales in the US, particularly in dresses and knitwear. Dreyer is speaking at industry-leading leadership conference Drapers Inner Circle Summit on 15 October 2026 at London's Ham Yard Hotel, alongside speakers such as Debenhams Group CEO Dan Finley and Nobody's Child CEO Jody Plows. Boden opens second US store in Nashville and plans third in Birmingham.

Boden opens second US store in Nashville and plans third in Birmingham. Boden has opened a second US store in Nashville, Tennessee, as it continues its US expansion. It has also announced that it will be launching a third standalone location in Birmingham, Alabama this autumn. The expansion builds on the success of the fashion brand's first American store in Atlanta, Georgia, which opened last year. Boden is now building its physical presence after launching online in the country in 2002. Situated in Hill Center Green Hills, the 1,700 square foot Nashville store has a distinctly British design, with bespoke chandeliers by London designer Richard Taylor, vintage furniture sourced from the UK, and artwork by long-standing Boden collaborator and British illustrator Charlotte Farmer. The fitting rooms are decorated with custom wallpaper by US printer Little Cocalico, featuring archival Boden catalogue imagery, while a vintage London map print designed by Boden's in-house print team appears throughout the accessories and dressing room area. Boden is now looking ahead to the opening of the 2,000 square foot store in Alabama at The Summit, where it will sit alongside a mix of premium and contemporary retailers including Tory Burch, Boss, and Madewell. July 8, 2026 The location was selected after Boden identified Birmingham as a strong opportunity for growth due to by existing customer demand in the region and insights from recent US customer focus groups.
