Boston Materials

Boston Materials

Manufactures liquid-metal thermal interface materials

Overview

Boston Materials develops and manufactures advanced energy-transfer composites for high-performance electronics, aerospace, and electrified mobility. Its Liquid Metal ZRT® uses vertically oriented carbon fibers embedded in a liquid metal matrix to create a drop-in thermal interface that conducts heat efficiently between components, and is designed for seamless integration into automated assembly. The company differentiates itself by combining Z-axis carbon fiber reinforcement with a liquid metal matrix and scaling via roll-to-roll production using reclaimed carbon fiber, enabling multiple applications from a single platform. Its goal is to scale production to meet industrial demand across semiconductor, aerospace, and electrified-vehicle markets while expanding sustainability through recycled carbon fiber use.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Mitsubishi Chemical invested via Diamond Edge Ventures for AI data center thermal solutions.
  • Raised $13.5M from AccelR8, Valo Ventures to expand semiconductor manufacturing in 2026.
  • 60-inch-wide roll-to-roll production scales ZRT films with PEEK, PEI polymers.

What critics are saying

  • Intel's Direct Die Cooling eliminates TIMs like ZRT in Lunar Lake processors by Q2 2026.
  • Nvidia GB200 racks deploy integrated liquid cooling, obsoleting drop-in ZRT preforms in Q3 2026.
  • $2M debt at 12-15% interest forces dilution as capex exceeds $13.5M raise by mid-2027.

What makes Boston Materials unique

  • Liquid Metal ZRT® delivers 5-8°C cooling improvement over thermal greases in data center GPUs.
  • ZRT interlaminar films mitigate delamination in aerospace composites using Z-axis Fiber™.
  • Z-axis carbon fiber enables lightweight bipolar plates for hydrogen fuel cells from recycled fiber.
