Overview

Brimstone Energy produces cement differently to reduce carbon emissions. It uses calcium silicate rocks instead of limestone to make Ordinary Portland cement, which avoids the CO2 released when limestone is heated. The process yields cement that can be used in standard concrete and, as a byproduct, supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that help further lower the concrete’s carbon footprint. The company’s approach is cleaner and often cheaper than traditional cement manufacturing, and it aims to scale up production from its West Oakland, California base. Overall goal: decarbonize cement and construction by offering a carbon-reducing, cost-competitive cement material and related SCMs that can replace conventional cement in the industry.

Brimstone Energy, a Californian startup, secured up to $189 million in grant funding to develop green cement by replacing limestone with carbon-free calcium silicate rocks.
