Adrena confirms fuel savings with digital twin routing solution.

Adrena confirms fuel savings with digital twin routing solution. * October 11, 2026 A digital twin-optimized routing solution developed by Adrena in collaboration with Brittany Ferries and Bureau Veritas Solutions M&O France has demonstrated fuel savings of up to 6 percent, the company said in a press release. The solution, which is said to deliver measurable reductions in fuel consumption while maintaining operational reliability, schedule integrity and service quality, has now been deployed across nine vessels in the Brittany Ferries fleet. It was validated through thousands of commercial voyages and nearly two years of onboard monitoring aboard the Galicia, one of Brittany Ferries' E-Flexer-class vessels. "The results achieved on the Galicia confirm what we have been developing for close to 15 years: a routing and consumption prediction model with 97% reliability, validated here under real commercial operating conditions and strict ETA constraints," said Michel Rodet, Adrena chairman and founder. "This level of accuracy has been proven in the field, not in a simulated environment. It was measured on actual crossings, by an independent body, over almost two years of study. It is this rigor that allows crews to trust AdrenaShip's recommendations and fully realize the operational and environmental benefits." Adrena has been developing the AdrenaShip routing software since 2012 for the maritime transport sector, providing shipowners and fleet operators with an intelligent routing tool designed for the real-world constraints of maritime operations. Brittany Ferries and Adrena first launched AdrenaShip in 2016 to improve fuel efficiency and operational safety through route optimization and performance analysis, delivering fuel savings of approximately 4 percent. Six years later, Brittany Ferries expanded the partnership to include BV Solutions to develop vessel-specific digital twins that enhance the predictive capabilities of AdrenaShip. The digital twins are said to improve the accuracy of routing recommendations and provide guidance on machinery operation by combining operational data, engineering expertise and onboard experience. New ferry design could pave the way for significantly lower CO2 emissions.

New ferry design could pave the way for significantly lower CO2 emissions. FerryFollowing several years of development work, OSK Design, the two small Danish island municipalities of Samsø and Ærø, and Bureau Veritas have received important regulatory clarification that could pave the way for a new generation of energy-efficient, zero-emission ferries. The Danish Maritime Authority has informed the project partners that the new LightCraftOSK ferry design project can proceed under national regulations, provided the ferries meet the required safety standards. This marks an important milestone in the development of future ferries. The clarification opens the door to a different approach to ferry design, using low weight to reduce energy consumption without compromising safety. The LightCraftOSK concept has been developed by OSK Design in close collaboration with the municipal ferry operators Samsø Rederi and Ærøfærgerne, and Bureau Veritas. A lighter aluminium hull can significantly reduce energy consumption compared with a traditional steel ferry design. The lower energy requirement also makes full electrification much more feasible and could therefore lead to a substantial reduction in CO2 emissions. The concept has been developed for Samsø Rederi's Hou-Sælvig route and Ærøfærgerne's route between Ærøskøbing and Svendborg. In the longer term, the design principles could be applied to similar domestic routes. Following discussions between the project partners, the Danish Maritime Authority and the European Commission, the Danish Maritime Authority has confirmed that the vessels will fall outside the scope of the EU Passenger Ship Directive and can instead be approved under national regulations for smaller passenger ships operating on domestic services. The requirements of the HSC Code may be applied as an alternative to the standard national requirements, provided an individual risk assessment demonstrates that the ferries achieve an equivalent level of safety. This clarification is precisely what makes the project interesting: safety remains the deciding factor, while the ferry design itself can be rethought with a focus on lower weight, reduced energy consumption and electric propulsion. The existing ferry on the Samsø route, the 2015-built LNG dual-fuel double-ended PRINSESSE ISABELLA, emits around 7,200 tonnes of CO2 annually, while the two ferries on the Ærø route, the 1999-built sisters MARSTAL and ÆRØSKØBING, together emit around 7,800 tonnes of CO2 a year. The ambition is for electrification, combined with lower energy consumption, to bring emissions from ferry operations themselves close to zero. For OSK Design, the regulatory clarification is an important step towards realising the first designs based on the LightCraftOSK concept. Kristian Carøe Lind, Chief Design Officer at OSK Design, said: "It is fantastic that we can now continue developing the FlexFerries according to the LightCraftOSK principles. The idea is simple: we want to give the ferries the capacity their routes require but build them significantly lighter. We save more than 30% in energy, substantially reducing the very high costs of charging infrastructure and the battery pack. Throughout the process, OSK has focused on optimising the municipalities' costs across the entire value chain, from the electricity grid and the port to the ferry." "With this regulatory clarification, an important barrier has been removed. Work now continues to secure funding so that the ambition of a new generation of energy-efficient, zero-emission ferries can become a reality," Kristian Carøe Lind concluded. Shippax explored the LightCraftOSK project and its potential in depth in October 2024, when it was still at an early stage. Ambassador Rodrigo de Azeredo Santos is the new president of IBRAM.

Ambassador Rodrigo de Azeredo Santos is the new president of IBRAM. The Green Iron Project will include CO[2] tracking throughout the production chain. Brazil Iron has partnered with Bureau Veritas, a French group specializing in inspection and certification, to assess the projected emissions of the Ferro Verde Project in Bahia. This work will also allow for the definition of the project's projected carbon intensity and its position relative to the CBAM, a European Union mechanism that establishes a cost for carbon emissions associated with imported products. This initiative precedes future independent verifications. The data structuring will include information on production volume, fuel and energy consumption, raw materials used, and supporting documentation for each record. Results will be expressed in tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per ton of HBI, indicating the sources and calculation methods. The work will also define the assumptions and limits of the system used in the emissions calculations. The system will allow each emission data point to be associated with its origin, the calculation method, and the supporting documentation. The study will cover mining, ore processing, transportation, pelletizing, and HBI production using the Midrex process. HBI is a high-quality metallic input for steel production in electric arc furnaces. The analysis will allow for the identification of the points of greatest emission along the production chain and the monitoring of the evolution of the operation's environmental performance. The first stage of the CBAM assessment, based on data from the feasibility phase, has already been completed. This work will allow for the distinction between the carbon footprint of the entire production chain and the emissions covered by the mechanism's regulatory limits. The results will be presented to potential steelmaking clients, commercial partners, and vehicle manufacturers in Europe and Japan. The initiative will also allow customers to assess the carbon intensity of HBI and project import-related costs. When a production unit does not provide its own emissions information, importers can use standard values defined by the European Commission. To use actual emissions data, customers will need calculations prepared according to the applicable methodology and verified by an accredited body. The European Commission has not yet published its list of accredited CBAM verifiers. Bureau Veritas has applied for accreditation, and Brazil Iron hopes the group will be among the first to obtain this authorization, subject to approval. The verification will allow Brazil Iron to consider the emissions actually recorded in the CBAM calculation. European customers will have greater predictability regarding the environmental performance and associated costs of the product. Brazil Iron intends to develop operational monitoring and conduct independent verifications for the annual reporting periods to CBAM, replacing projected data with actual operational records. Operation is scheduled to begin in 2031, subject to financing, project development, and necessary environmental approvals.
