Calibrant Energy hires Judith Judson as EVP to fast-track data centre power access

Calibrant Energy has appointed Judith Judson as Executive Vice President of Regulatory and Policy. Judson brings extensive experience across data center power, clean energy technology, and energy regulation. Most recently, Judson served as Senior Vice President of Energy for North America at Vantage Data Centers, where she led power strategy supporting over $40 billion in new data center investment. She previously held CEO and executive roles at Fortescue Zero and Fortescue Energy, and served as Vice President at National Grid, where she led corporate strategy for the company's $25 billion US utility business. In her new role, Judson will work with policymakers and regulators to advance frameworks for on-site distributed energy resources. She will help customers deploy behind-the-meter battery storage, generation, and microgrid solutions. Judson also served as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources.

Judson is a nationally recognized energy executive with a track record of scaling organizations and emerging technologies across the data center, utility, clean energy, and government sectors. Judson most recently served as Senior Vice President of Energy for North America at Vantage Data Centers, where she led the company's power strategy, from utility engagement and regulatory approvals to onsite generation and structured energy contracts, developing power in support of more than $40 billion in new data center investment. Earlier, Judson held executive roles at National Grid, including Vice President and Head of U.S. Strategy, where she led corporate strategy for the company's $25 billion U.S. utility business. She also drove distributed energy growth at Ameresco and led emerging technologies consulting at Customized Energy Solutions. In the public sector, Judson served as Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources, where she launched the state's first Clean Peak Standard, developed the SMART solar incentive program, and oversaw major offshore wind and transmission procurements. She previously chaired the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. Earlier in her career, she helped advance Beacon Power's energy storage portfolio and advocated for FERC Order 755, which created pay-for-performance compensation for fast-responding grid resources. Nvidia-backed Verse raises $54M to help AI data centres skip the power queue. The San Francisco startup, led by Bessemer and backed by Nvidia, says its software lets data centres skip years-long grid queues by running on on-site batteries and solar, without ever throttling their compute. June 18, 2026 - 4:35 pm For years, the scarce resource in AI was chips. Now it is power. Verse Enterprises wants to unblock that bottleneck. The San Francisco startup has raised an oversubscribed $54mn Series B. Bessemer Venture Partners led the round. GV, Nvidia and Norrsken VC also took part. The race to AI is now a race to power. Data centres are scaling faster than grids can handle. In many regions, developers wait years just to plug in. Generation shortages, transmission bottlenecks and long interconnection queues all slow them down. The strain is everywhere. Denmark recently paused new grid connections after AI data centres overwhelmed its system. The EU has even asked households to cut power use at peak times. Verse says hundreds of data centres sit stuck in utility queues, which it claims leaves $500bn in annual revenue on the table. Skipping the line with batteries. The | of EU tech Verse's answer is to jump the queue. Its new product, Dispatch Intelligence, manages on-site batteries and solar in real time. The grid then sees a flexible load instead of a constant one. Crucially, the data centre never throttles its compute. For the hardware, Verse has teamed up with battery developer Calibrant Energy. Calibrant brings the on-site storage and solar; Verse runs the software. It is the same behind-the-meter logic now pulling money toward clean-energy-as-a-service startups. Together, the company says, they can bring new capacity online up to three years faster. "Clean energy is actually the economic and feasible solution, because the speed of deployment is fast," said Verse co-founder and chief executive Seyed Madaeni. Will utilities play along? The model is not a sure thing. Allison Weis, global head of storage at Wood Mackenzie, says flexibility can lower the barriers to connecting, but guarantees nothing. Utilities have not set standards for what data centres must do to get online faster. Nor have they confirmed that batteries or on-site power will count. "There's no uniform framework," Weis said. That may soon change. US federal regulators are due to publish guidance on speeding up data-centre connections. The open question is who pays: the hyperscalers, through their own generation, or everyone else, through grid upgrades. What the money is for. Verse is not alone in this race. Nvidia has also backed Emerald AI, which builds similar software, and Verse is now wiring Dispatch Intelligence into Nvidia's DSX AI Factory design for gigascale sites. The chipmaker has good reason to help: every data centre stuck in a queue is one that cannot buy its chips. The startup plans to move fast. It wants to manage more than 100 sites within a year. For Verse, clean power is no longer the slow option. It is the shortcut.

US battery storage firms eye AI data centre demand amid grid and supply chain hurdles

Battery storage firms in the US are seeing surging demand from AI data centres, but face significant obstacles in scaling rapidly. Lengthy grid connection queues and supply chain dependence on China are hampering growth, according to industry experts. Battery energy storage systems can smooth power demand and manage spikes for data centres, whilst reducing reliance on diesel generators. However, whilst data centres can be built in 18 to 24 months, grid connections can take three to seven years in parts of the US. Power demand from data centres could reach 9% to 17% of US electricity supply by 2030, up from around 4% today. The US added a record 57.6 GWh of new battery storage capacity in 2025, with annual deployments projected to reach 110 GWh by 2030.

Will be intergrated with 7.2MW rooftop solar farm February 19, 2026 Energy storage company Calibrant Energy has partnered with data center developer Iron Mountain to deploy a 23MWh on-site battery energy storage system at the latter's New Jersey data center. 03 Sep 2025 A deep dive into the many use cases of battery energy storage Calibrant will integrate the battery unit with a 7.2MW rooftop solar installation in operation at the facility. "This is what the future of powering large loads looks like," said Phil Martin, CEO of Calibrant Energy. "Customers can grow and control costs while strengthening the grid, proving that large power users are part of the energy solution rather than a burden." According to the company, advanced real-time controls will enable the battery to act as a dynamic asset that stabilizes regional grid infrastructure during peak demand. "Battery storage is a critical component of our broader strategy to support the local energy ecosystem," added Chris Pennington, senior director of energy and sustainability at Iron Mountain. "Flexible, on-site assets like this improve the economic and operational efficiency of the local utility grid, in addition to supporting increased reliability for all electric consumers. This project demonstrates how the data center industry can bring solutions to emerging grid challenges." Iron Mountain's New Jersey data center is located in Edison and spans approximately 830,000 sq ft (77,110 sqm) across a 43-acre campus. The data center has 30MW of capacity and houses more than 180 customers, including 20+ carriers. Iron Mountain has around 415MW of colocation and hyperscale capacity in 21 markets across seven countries and three continents. The company said its data center portfolio has a potential capacity of nearly 1.3GW. Calibrant has partnered with a number of data center providers to deploy on-site battery storage. Last October, the company partnered with Aligned Data Centers to deploy a 31MW/62MWh BESS system at one of the data center company's campuses. Before this, in August, the company energized three front-of-the-meter BESS in New York in collaboration with CoreSite. The BESS will provide 13.5MW, or 55.7MWh, of dispatchable capacity to the Con Edison grid in New York. It will be used by CoreSite and a leading hospital institution via Value of Distributed Energy Resources credits. More in rack level.
