Celgard

High-performance membranes for energy storage

Overview

Celgard makes and sells high-performance membrane materials and thin separators used inside batteries, as well as fabrics for outdoor apparel and medical PPE. The membranes sit between battery electrodes to prevent contact while allowing ions to pass, enabling safe and efficient operation in lithium-ion and other chemistries. The company stands out through its Asahi Kasei Group affiliation and strategic alliances (such as with Æsir Technologies) to pursue new battery chemistries, while expanding manufacturing capacity. Its goal is to provide reliable membranes and protective fabrics at scale to support safer, longer-lasting energy storage and protective textiles, and to drive industry growth through collaborations.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Concord's new coating technology supports customized separators for EV and stationary storage customers.
  • The Æsir alliance opens optionality in Nickel-Zinc, Zinc-Air, Lithium-Zinc, and Sodium-Zinc batteries.
  • Domestic capacity expansions strengthen Celgard's position in the U.S. lithium-ion separator supply chain.

What critics are saying

  • Chinese separator suppliers pressure pricing and volume contracts across lithium-ion battery supply chains.
  • Concord expansion raises fixed-cost exposure if EV and ESS orders arrive slowly.
  • Pre-commercial next-generation battery partnerships can absorb R&D spend without near-term revenue.

What makes Celgard unique

  • Celgard is a 50-year battery separator specialist with broad microporous membrane expertise.
  • Its portfolio spans lithium-ion, lithium primary, specialty batteries, and technical textiles.
  • It operates manufacturing in the United States, China, and Korea for regional supply.

Celgard celebrates 15 years at Concord site, expands separator coating capability.

Celgard celebrates 15 years at Concord site, expands separator coating capability. 26 May 2026 Celgard has launched new coating capabilities at its Concord, North Carolina manufacturing facility as the lithium-ion battery separator manufacturer marked the site's 15th anniversary. The company said the expansion adds new "state-of-the-art" coating technology capable of producing functional coatings, multilayer coated separators (MCS) and other customised separator products for lithium-ion batteries. According to the company, its new capabilities support a range of coating patterns, thicknesses, coverage levels and multilayer structures, while remaining compatible with multiple base-film technologies. The company said this would enable the development of more tailored separator products for electric vehicles, stationary energy storage systems and next-generation battery applications. Celgard's second US manufacturing site. The Concord plant opened in 2011 as Celgard's second US manufacturing site and forms part of the company's North American manufacturing network. The announcement comes amid the separation of Celgard and lead-acid battery separator specialist Daramic following the sale of Daramic by parent company Asahi Kasei. Celgard describes itself as the original inventor of ceramic-coated separators (CCS), a technology widely used in lithium-ion batteries to improve thermal stability and safety performance. "With our global footprint especially deeply rooted in US, we are excited to drive the LIB industry to a new level with our partners," the company said.
