Cineplex cuts Q1 loss 36% to $16.3M as theatre attendance rises 17%

Cineplex reduced its first quarter loss by 36% to C$22.4 million as theatre attendance rose 17% to 9.84 million patrons. Total revenues increased 15.6% to C$291 million, whilst box office revenues climbed 25% to C$127.4 million. International titles delivered 13% of ticket receipts, with CEO Ellis Jacob highlighting Dhurandhar: The Revenge as the highest-grossing Hindi language film in North American history. Cineplex generated over 30% of its domestic box office from that release. Jacob expressed confidence in Hollywood studios' commitment to a 45-day theatrical window following CinemaCon, citing promises from Paramount-Skydance's David Ellison and NBCUniversal's Donna Langley. Netflix has also committed to a 49-day exclusive window for its upcoming Narnia film in 2027.

Cineplex extends $100M bank credit agreement to 2028 or 2029

Cineplex has extended its bank credit agreement, pushing the maturity date from March 2027 to either September 2028 or March 2029, depending on whether its existing senior secured notes are refinanced. The amendment also replaces benchmark reference rates and provides additional flexibility for distributions and debt repayments connected to property sales. The agreement maintains a $100 million covenant-lite revolving credit facility without financial maintenance covenants unless borrowings exceed 40% of total capacity. As of 31 December 2025, no amounts were drawn under the facility, with $7.7 million reserved in letters of credit. "This continues to provide us with flexibility and a strong liquidity profile," said Ellis Jacob, president and CEO. Cineplex operates 170 cinemas and entertainment venues across Canada.

Cineplex reports $32.4M February box office, 93% of prior year despite no blockbuster release

Cineplex reported box office revenues of $32.4 million for February 2026, reaching approximately 93% of the prior year's results. The Canadian entertainment company said original titles Wuthering Heights, GOAT and Send Help led the month's performance, demonstrating that a diverse film slate can sustain meaningful box office without blockbuster releases. February 2025 had benefited from successful international titles including Ne Zha 2 and Chhaava, which represented roughly one-quarter of that month's box office. The month concluded strongly with Scream 7, which achieved the highest opening weekend in the franchise's history. Looking ahead, Cineplex cited upcoming releases including Pixar's Hoppers, Amazon's Project Hail Mary and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie as promising for the business.
