Like many FreightTech companies that have laid off workers in recent months, CloudTrucks blames the declining freight market for the job cuts.“In this tough freight market, we must focus on operating efficiently so we can best serve our customers and maintain competitive rates,” Tobenna Arodiogbu, co-founder and CEO of San Francisco-based CloudTrucks, said in an emailed statement to FreightWaves. The venture capital-backed trucking technology provider, which has raised nearly $142 million since its founding in 2019, declined to disclose the exact number of employees affected or the percentage of the company’s workforce that was part of the layoffs announced last week.PitchBook, an online resource tool for analysts, private equity and venture capital investors, puts CloudTrucks’ official employee count at 112 employees in 2022. CloudTrucks, which markets fintech solutions aimed to help owner-operators run their trucking businesses, raised $115 million in Series B funding in November 2021 in a deal led by Tiger Global. “We are immensely grateful for the contributions of each of our departing employees and are committed to offering support to impacted employees while ensuring that the company moves forward in a way that is best for our customers, our partners and the future of the business,” Arodiogbu said.Besides Arodiogbu, CloudTrucks’ co-founders include Jin Shieh and George Ezenna. Last month, CloudTrucks surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults about general perceptions of truck drivers and if they have heard of the truck parking shortage. The results, published in CloudTrucks’ 2023 Truck Parking Shortage Survey, highlight that while Americans generally have a positive view of truck drivers, most respondents didn’t know that the parking shortage had a major impact on their quality of life. One major challenge is that while respondents support additional truck parking, they just don’t want that parking near them. The report said: “When asked, ‘How close to your home would you support the construction of new overnight parking facilities for long-haul truckers?’ the majority (80%) only support facilities that are at least three miles from their homes, and 5% said they did not support new construction at all. Only 15% said they are comfortable with facilities being within 2 miles of their homes.”NIMBYISM plagues many forms of property development and truck parking is not exempt

Loaded And Rolling: Truck Parking Survey Highlights Public Awareness Challenges

Americans value commercial truck drivers and the service they offer. However, they don’t want drivers parking their rigs anywhere near their homes.That was a key finding in a 2023 survey of truck parking issues published Tuesday by CloudTrucks, an IT-based provider that supports the commercial truck driving sector. About 56% of the 1,000 American adults surveyed were unfamiliar with the issue. About 21% didn’t realize that many drivers end up sleeping in their vehicles, reflecting a lack of knowledge of the inconvenience and safety risks they encounter on a daily basis without sufficient dedicated parking capacity.Once these aspects were explained to them, 86% recognized truck parking as an important issue, and 95% supported the building of overnight parking facilities.However, 80% said they would only support the construction of facilities if they were at least 3 miles from their homes.About two-thirds of respondents called for more government funding to address the parking shortage, including the building of more truck stops and rest areas. About 43% said they would support relaxed zoning and land use regulations that could pave the way for more parking. Approximately 40% supported giving tax incentives to truck stop operator chains and other private companies to create more parking.The survey indicated that Americans understand the difficulty of a drivers’ jobs and the value they deliver
