Cracker Barrel, Cheesecake Factory, Victoria's Secret, CarMax, and Airbnb have all outperformed Nvidia this year, posting gains between 38% and 130% compared to the chip giant's 12% rise. Cracker Barrel has surged 130%, fuelled by improved sales trends, cost improvements, and strategic changes under new CEO David Deno. Cheesecake Factory stock has more than doubled, driven by strong performance from its Fox Restaurant Concepts brands, particularly Flower Child, which posted 21% sales growth in Q2. CarMax has gained over 65%, supported by stronger sales and cost cuts. The consumer stocks' gains eclipse Nvidia's more modest 2026 performance despite the chipmaker projecting 70% revenue growth for fiscal 2028.

Cracker Barrel appointed 69-year-old David Deno after his retirement, joining a trend of companies bringing back former executives. Nike recalled Elliott Hill, Verizon recruited Dan Schulman after his PayPal retirement, and Disney returned Bob Iger. Russell Reynolds Associates found that 34% of S&P 500 CEOs appointed in the first half of 2026 had previously led public companies, up from 22% a year earlier. Boards see experienced leaders as safer during pressure. However, each retired CEO recall blocks promotions that would cascade through corporate hierarchies. Executives who prepared for advancement through relocations and difficult assignments may leave for competitors or reduce their commitment. The practice also affects diversity, as retired CEO pools reflect less diverse leadership eras, potentially undermining years of pipeline development.
Cracker Barrel's appointment of 69-year-old retired CEO Dave Deno has highlighted a growing trend of companies turning to former executives to fill leadership gaps. Deno, who stepped down as CEO of Bloomin' Brands in 2024, replaced Julie Masino after her departure following a controversial logo redesign. Data from Russell Reynolds Associates shows 34% of S&P 500 CEOs appointed in the first half of 2026 previously led a public company, up from 22% the year prior. Verizon and Boeing have similarly tapped retired CEOs Dan Schulman and Kelly Ortberg. The trend reflects weakening succession pipelines as CEOs stay longer in their roles. Average CEO age increased by 10 years to 61 between 2000 and 2023, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research. External hires at S&P 500 firms rose to 33% last year from 18% in 2024.
Cracker Barrel CEO Julie Masino will step down effective 10 August, replaced by former Bloomin' Brands chief David Deno. The departure follows last summer's disastrous logo change, which saw the restaurant chain swap its traditional Uncle Herschel design for a minimalist wordmark. The decision triggered immediate backlash, including criticism from President Donald Trump. Cracker Barrel reversed course within a week and paused accompanying dining room remodels. Store traffic fell 8% after the logo launched, compared with 1% in the first half of August. The episode erased close to $100 million in market value. Masino told conservative radio host Glenn Beck in November she felt "fired by America". The timing follows Cracker Barrel raising its fiscal 2026 profit outlook on 20 July.
