Crowley crew win US gallantry award for response to Stena Immaculate incident.

Crowley crew win US gallantry award for response to Stena Immaculate incident. Award recognises safe evacuation of tanker after it was hit by container ship * TradeWinds US bureau chief Updated 30 minutes ago The US government has honoured the crew of a Crowley-Stena Bulk ship for gallantry in their response to a high-profile incident in the North Sea. The Maritime Administration recognised the 23 American seafarers with the MARAD Gallant Ship Award more than a year after their US-flag product carrier was hit. The 49,600-dwt Stena Immaculate (built 2017) was struck by a small container ship in March 2025 while it was laden with jet fuel. Eric Priante Martin takes a weekly, in-depth look at topics in the American maritime sector, including US-flag and Jones Act shipping, shipbuilding and the merchant marine. MARAD recognised the crew for safely evacuating the Stena Immaculate without serious injury and for preventing greater damage to the vessel, its cargo and the environment, according to US shipping conglomerate Crowley. James Fowler, executive vice president for shipping and logistics at the Florida company, said the honour underscores the essential role that US mariners play in sustaining supply chains and supporting national defence. "The bravery and immediate response of these 23 professional mariners saved lives and prevented catastrophic damage to the environment," he said. "Their extreme courage and professionalism embodied the highest ideals of US maritime." At the time of the incident, the Stena Immaculate was operated by Crowley Stena Marine Solutions, a joint venture between the Florida company and Sweden's Stena Bulk. Crew provider. As part of the venture, Crowley provided crew for the vessel. The tanker, which was anchored when it was struck, was carrying jet fuel for the US Navy's Military Sealift Command. The master of the other ship, the 804-teu Solong (built 2005), was found guilty of manslaughter after a UK trial over the death of a seafarer on his vessel.
