In June, ahead of ACE26, TAG Members from across the country convened in Washington, D.C., for the third annual US National TAG Member Meetup. 26 July 2026 In June, ahead of ACE26, TAG Members from across the country convened in Washington, D.C., for the third annual US National TAG Member Meetup. The event was co-hosted by DC Water at their Headquarters. The Meetup included the announcement of the 2026 Trailblazer Award Winners, peer-to-peer utility conversations, and utility-led presentations on the journey to creating and establishing innovation programs. 2026 Trailblazer Awards. The Trailblazer Awards recognize utilities and individuals pushing the boundaries in the water sector, demonstrating that collaboration and forward-thinking leadership are essential to addressing today's water challenges. The Meetup also gave TAG Members the chance to share organizational updates on innovation projects with conversations touching on new technologies under evaluation, biggest internal bottlenecks to adopting new technology (and how members are working around them), and capabilities or solutions attendees wish existed but haven't been able to find. Some of the key takeaways from those discussions included: * Utilities are formalizing innovation through structured roadmaps and integrated offices with the goal of reducing internal silos, prioritizing modernization investments, and ensuring responsible adoption of emerging technologies, particularly around AI. * Workforce readiness, culture, and stakeholder engagement are important determinants of success. In some cases, the most persistent bottlenecks for technology adoption are related to change management rather than technical implementation. * Emerging regulatory and environmental pressures are shaping innovation priorities. Areas like PFAS treatment, groundwater reliance, desalination, and algae and emerging contaminant monitoring not only require advanced technologies, but also require specialized planning and communication to ensure communities and stakeholders are aligned. Innovation requires new ways of thinking, curiosity, and persistence. One of the core themes that emerged during the Member Meetup was the importance of people and communication in sustaining and driving innovation. In many instances, the biggest barriers to technology adoption were change management related, such as managing change resistance and stakeholder buy-in. At the same time, there are many examples of progress driven by curiosity and a willingness to explore, ask questions, and rethink familiar processes. Establishing and integrating innovation programs. At the Member Meetup, DC Water and WSSC Water shared ongoing efforts to grow and enhance internal innovation programs. DC Water Roadmap As part of their longstanding commitment to innovation, DC Water is working on a multi-year Roadmap to institutionalize modernization and continuous improvement within the organization. Coupled with the acceleration of AI, DC Water's Roadmap is also focused on ensuring that tools are selected responsibly, in accordance with robust cybersecurity protocols, regulatory compliance, and based on strategic priority, value, and scalability across the organization. WSSC Water Innovation, Technology and Research Office WSSC Water has made innovation a central pillar of their organization. Through a bottom-up approach, they have created formal pathways for employees of all levels to bring ideas forward, share with organizational stakeholders, obtain buy-in, and create recommendations to leadership. From the Trailblazer Award honorees to the candid conversations shared throughout the Meetup, the message is clear: innovation doesn't happen in silos it happens through partnership and shared learnings. Final tunnel gets underway as DC Water advances Clean Rivers Programme. 23/07/2026. Construction has officially begun on the Piney Branch Tunnel, the final major tunnelling contract within DC Water's landmark Clean Rivers Programme, marking the start of the last phase of one of the largest water infrastructure initiatives ever undertaken in the United States. The project will play a key role in reducing combined sewer overflows into Washington DC's waterways and improving water quality in Rock Creek, the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. DC Water held a groundbreaking ceremony on 9 July to mark the start of construction on the deep storage tunnel, which will intercept stormwater and wastewater that currently overflows into Piney Branch during periods of heavy rainfall. Once completed, the tunnel will provide a storage capacity of at least 4.2 million gallons, capturing combined sewer flows and conveying them to the Blue Plains Advanced Wastewater Treatment Plant for treatment rather than allowing untreated discharges into local waterways. The Piney Branch Tunnel is the final major tunnel to be constructed under the Clean Rivers Programme, a long-term investment that includes more than 18 miles (29 km) of deep underground tunnels designed to capture combined sewer overflows across the District of Columbia. When the overall programme is complete, combined sewer overflows are expected to be reduced by approximately 96% across the system, with significant improvements in water quality throughout the region. The new tunnel is expected to reduce overflow events into Piney Branch by around 96%, cutting the average number of annual discharges from approximately 25 to about one each year. Construction will involve deep excavation, controlled rock blasting and installation of the underground tunnel and associated infrastructure before the project enters service alongside the Potomac River Tunnel in 2029. The Clean Rivers Programme has already transformed wastewater management in Washington through a series of major tunnelling projects, including the Anacostia River Tunnel and the ongoing Potomac River Tunnel. Together, these schemes form a network of deep storage tunnels capable of capturing stormwater and wastewater during intense rainfall events before transferring the flows to the Blue Plains treatment facility, one of the largest advanced wastewater treatment plants in the world. With work now commencing on the Piney Branch Tunnel, DC Water is entering the final stage of a programme that has become a benchmark for large-scale urban water tunnelling and environmental restoration. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2029, bringing the Clean Rivers Programme closer to its objective of dramatically reducing combined sewer overflows and protecting the capital's rivers for future generations. ACE26 highlights: how DC Water advanced the conversation on water. June 30, 2026 The future of water is built through collaboration, and one of the largest annual gatherings of water professionals in the nation was a powerful reminder of what's possible when our industry comes together. Over three days, more than 80 DC Water employees joined thousands of water professionals in Washington, DC, where we served as the host utility for the American Water Works Association's Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE26). We exchanged ideas, shared best practices, and explored solutions that strengthen the water sector. DC Water had a strong presence throughout the conference, with more than 25 employees serving as presenters, moderators, and panelists across more than 20 sessions. They shared expertise on key priorities such as Pure Water DC - our plan to strengthen and diversify the District's drinking water supply including advanced water recycling - and Lead Free DC (LFDC), our effort to replace every lead service line in the city. In addition, Team Blue highlighted our work in community engagement and public trust, social media and digital communications, and the use of AI and emerging technologies to improve operations and customer service. Together we strengthened partnerships and exchanged ideas with peers from across the industry. During the conference, our leadership was also recognized among the industry's best. LFDC received the Lead Service Line Replacement Collaborative's Outstanding Leadership in Lead Service Line Replacement award, acknowledging the collective effort behind one of the District's most significant public health initiatives. We were excited as well to see DC Water's apprentices honored during the AWWA apprentice pinning ceremony, celebrating the next generation of water professionals. Beyond the presentations, ACE26 created opportunities for us to learn from others. Conversations with a delegation from Tokyo Water reinforced the value of international collaboration and exchanging ideas that help utilities better serve their communities. As the hometown utility, DC Water proudly kept attendees hydrated with water refill stations, welcoming visitors from across the industry to the nation's capital. Tomorrow Water advances next-generation nitrogen removal with PdNA technology partnership. May. 28, 2026 Tomorrow Water announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the development and global commercialization of Partial Denitrification-Anammox (PdNA), establishing a pathway for intensified, energy-efficient nitrogen removal in wastewater treatment. The agreement licenses the patented DETOUR(TM) PdNA technology from Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) and DC Water for integration within Tomorrow Water's PROTEUS(R) platform, uniting advanced biological nutrient removal with a compact process to reduce treatment footprint and improve operational efficiency. Partnership builds on a U.S. DOE-funded PdNA demonstration project led by AECOM at Linda County Water District in Northern California, demonstrating the tertiary PdNA process within Tomorrow Water's PROTEUS(R) system. Demonstrations were operated and managed by Caliskaner Water Technologies, Inc. (CWT) to support validation of process performance and scalability. The strategic partnership agreement was formalized during IFAT Munich 2026 by Mr. E.F. Dongwoo Kim, Founder & CEO of Tomorrow Water, together with Dr. Sudhir Murthy, CEO of NEWhub Water Corporation, and Dr. Bernhard Wett, CEO of NEWport GmbH, with participation from HRSD.
