David Nolan gallery moves from Upper East Side to bigger space in Tribeca. September 2, 2026 10:32am Striking a defiant tone at a time when the future of the gallery ecosystem remains unknown, David Nolan announced a move for his namesake gallery from New York's Upper East Side to a bigger space in Tribeca. "At a time when the art world is contracting, in my usual subversive fashion, I wanted to place a bet on the industry and show my confidence in my artists and long-time collectors, along with expanding our collaborations with other galleries outside the U.S.," Nolan said in a press release announcing the move to a new 6,000-square-foot space in a 1920s-era building on Leonard Street. "There is rarely a perfect time to expand or open a new gallery, and taking risks is part of what running a gallery entails," Nolan continued. "After almost 40 years in the business, my gallery has watched change come many times over. I passionately believe in art and in the artists I exhibit, and in the loyal collectors and curators I have worked with - many of them for 20 to 30 years. I feel certain that this is the right moment to expand." The new gallery - one of 74 participating in Art Week NYC, an initiative presented by ARTnews, Art in America, and Artforum from November 11 to 14 - will be situated on two floors designed by studioMDA, whose founder, Markus Dochantschi, designed Nolan's first space in Chelsea in collaboration with artist Richard Artschwager. The first show, opening September 9, will be devoted to early works from the 1960s by Italian painter Valerio Adami. A show scheduled for November will feature sculptures by Chakaia Booker. Programming in 2027 will focus in part on what the press release describes as "overlooked artists - those whose work has been reduced to a single commercial facet, or passed over by more fashionable, exclusive corners of the art world."
