eBay bans airbag sales as concerns about faulty or counterfeit parts rise. NPR | By Willa Rubin Published September 24, 2026 at 4:00 AM CDT The online retailer eBay is joining a pack of its competitors in banning sales of airbags and many kinds of airbag parts in the U.S. Although eBay hasn't said what motivated this action, the company's move comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released investigation results in April which found that certain substandard airbag inflators imported from China were responsible for a dozen deaths or serious injuries since 2023. In July, The Wall Street Journal traced the origins of several such faulty - and potentially counterfeit - airbag components, and found that one had been purchased as an aftermarket part on eBay. eBay declined an interview with NPR, but pointed to an online statement saying the decision was made "following a comprehensive review of the risks these products may pose to eBay users." In an emailed statement to NPR, eBay said that the company would enforce the new policy by using seller compliance audits, filtering algorithms and AI-supported monitoring. Consumer safety advocates welcomed eBay's move. "It's a good thing that eBay is no longer going to be offering airbags or airbag components on their platform. And it's about time," said Rosemary Shahan, president of the nonprofit Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety. "There are a lot of dangerous airbags out there." But William Wallace, director of safety advocacy for Consumer Reports, cautioned that faulty or counterfeit airbags could still crop up on other sites. "It is a game of Whack-A-Mole," he said. After all, eBay is not the first company to ban the sale of airbags or components. Amazon, the nation's biggest online retailer, prohibits airbag sales. So does Meta, the owner of Facebook Marketplace, and so do the Chinese retail sites Temu and Alibaba. Amazon, Meta and Temu all told NPR that they continuously monitor their platforms for prohibited item listings. They did not respond to questions about what motivated their bans. Alibaba pointed to a press release stating that the company banned airbags over safety concerns in 2014, and that it later extended its ban "to component parts for the same reason, as well as to halt potential fakes." The release said algorithms on Alibaba's platforms will intercept pre-listings and block them. Wallace points out that these bans alone don't seem to be preventing bad airbags from reaching the market. "It's one thing to have a policy in place banning the sale of airbags," he said. "It's an entirely different thing to actually see the sale of airbags stop." How airbags work. Airbags are not made of pillowy fluff. "Airbags are actually like a pyrotechnic device," said Becky Mueller, a senior research engineer at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, an independent nonprofit that conducts vehicle crash tests and awards safety ratings. During a crash, Mueller said, a sensor measuring the car's speed determines whether it's just been in a high-speed collision and sends a signal to the airbag module. This ignites the airbag inflator. Gases inside the inflator expand in a fraction of a second. This creates the airbag's pillowy appearance, which is meant to protect a driver's head and chest. But when airbags don't work properly, Mueller said, the inflator can become dangerous. Its parts can become brittle and break apart. Then, as the airbag inflates, those parts are "flying at your face." That shrapnel puts people in danger, and has caused fatalities - including those alleged in the April NHTSA report. NHTSA's largest airbag recall, which affected an estimated 67 million airbags in the U.S., began in 2014, after the agency received reports that shrapnel from airbags made by the Japanese company Takata - used in vehicles made by Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, among others - had led to fatalities. Scientists ultimately found the company's airbag igniters were letting in moisture and degrading over time, which was particularly dangerous to drivers in hotter, more humid climates. Takata later filed for bankruptcy and was sentenced to pay over $1 billion in criminal penalties; NHTSA still has a "Do Not Drive" advisory for vehicles with a particular kind of Takata airbag, which is more likely to explode during a crash. And while there's always a risk that an automotive part could malfunction, that risk is compounded if it's counterfeit. It might look like a brand-name part, but it may not work like one, and it might not have been tested properly - or it may not deploy at all, said Mueller. Plus, it's hard to recall fake parts, because they're masquerading as something else, and it's hard to pin down who imported and distributed them. Online counterfeiting doesn't seem like a big deal for some kinds of products, Mueller said. Worst case scenario, she said, if she accidentally buys some fake Nikes, "I'm out a bunch of money and maybe the shoes fall apart in six months." "The stakes are much higher when we're talking about lives," she continued. Because of counterfeit airbags, she said, "People have died. People have been injured. People have been maimed." Could your airbag be faulty or counterfeit? New cars come with airbags which are certified by the manufacturer. But it can be harder to know the provenance of airbags in used cars. If an airbag needed to be replaced, like after a collision, a mechanic or car owner could have discovered that the original model wasn't available any more - and gone shopping online. There are a few ways to check your car's airbag history. Carfax offers a free check to see if a used car's airbags were already deployed. Vehiclehistory.gov allows car owners to purchase and view a full vehicle history. You can get a Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange, or CLUE, report from Lexis Nexis, which keeps a record of insurance claims from the previous seven years - which could also include if a car's airbags were ever reported as stolen. But the only way to tell for sure if a car's airbag poses a risk is to have it inspected by an experienced mechanic who can tell you whether it could be dangerous.

The expansion includes an office in Mexico City with a dedicated team in the region, as well as an increased presence at Latin America's biggest mobile app events. Stream's investment in the Latin American market will accelerate the region's already growing digital economy. The region's mobile internet audience stands at 413 million people, or 64% of the population, and is expected to grow to nearly 500 million by 2030. That growth is happening on a mobile-first, chat-first foundation. Messaging app adoption in Latin America is among the highest in the world. In Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil, more than 90% of internet users are active on WhatsApp, a level of daily chat behavior that shapes what users expect from every other app they use. Stream aims to replicate its success with global partners like eBay, Kalshi, Bumble, Strava, and Patreon in Latin America. Three of Stream's customers in the region already show what that looks like in practice. * Fretebras, part of the Frete.com group, connects truck drivers with shipping companies across Brazil. Drivers and operators negotiate freight directly inside Stream Chat, exchanging documents and audio messages and using in-app voice calling to close deals without leaving the platform. * Mango, a digital wallet used across Paraguay, built peer-to-peer money transfers directly into chat. Users can send money, request payments, and pool funds together in group chats, all inside the same conversation where they are already talking. * Globo uses Stream's comment moderation tools to manage user-generated content at scale, including heightened moderation during Brazil's election season, when comment sections carry outsized public attention. This gives companies in the region more direct access to Stream's team throughout the year to discuss their specific use case, product roadmap, and integration support, and it also gives Stream a closer view of what LATAM builders need next. Every conversation I have with a company in this region comes back to the same thing. They are growing fast and they need a partner who understands their market. That is what Stream.io Inc is building here. * Luigi Manrique, Account Executive, LATAM Ready to Increase App Engagement? Integrate Stream's real-time communication components today
eBay lets Ambassador affiliates create links inside its mobile app and adds the Smart Share Chrome extension to the program. eBay added affiliate link creation to its mobile app for Ambassadors and released a Smart Share Chrome extension that enables them to build a link for the page they have open in their browser, instead of having to open the Ambassador portal. eBay launched the Ambassador program in April 2025 as a self-service option for buyers, sellers, and smaller creators, while repositioning its legacy eBay Partner Network program toward managed partners, professional marketers, and publishers using advanced affiliate tools. The new Smart Share tools bring some of the functionality to the Ambassador program that has been available through the Partner Network for several years. Ethan Allen says it will name new CEO as activist investor challenges board's succession plan. September 22, 2026 Ethan Allen Interiors announced Monday plans to name a successor to longtime CEO Farooq Kathwari by June 30, 2027, as the Danbury-based furniture maker faces a proxy fight with an activist investor seeking to replace its board. The company said that a board committee made up of independent directors has hired an executive search firm to evaluate internal and external candidates. It described the search as an "ongoing formal CEO succession process," but did not say when it began. Kathwari, 82, has led Ethan Allen for 38 years. His current contract is scheduled to expire June 30, 2027, according to the company. Under the announced plan, he will remain a nonexecutive director after that date until the company's 2027 annual shareholder meeting, when he will leave the board. Bergeron criticized the company's announcement, arguing that the incumbent directors waited too long to address succession and should not be entrusted with choosing Kathwari's replacement. "A credible succession process should not have needed a proxy contest to become visible to shareholders," Bergeron said in a statement. Ethan Allen's directors defended their planning, saying succession is a standing board agenda item and the announced timeline will support an orderly transition. "The succession process has a clear timeline that reflects the Board's commitment to an orderly, well-governed leadership transition," said David Sable, the company's lead independent director. The board said it is seeking a leader who can accelerate Ethan Allen's technology investments, efforts to connect its stores and online business, and supply chain improvements. Kathwari will continue leading the management team while supporting the search and transition, the company said. "I fully support the Board-led, independent CEO succession process," Kathwari said. Bergeron, however, argued that the timetable could leave Kathwari in charge for another nine months and delay changes he contends are needed to reverse the company's performance. He framed the contested director election as a decision about which slate shareholders should trust to select and oversee Ethan Allen's next CEO. Bergeron's separate search is being led by Kristine Miller, a former eBay chief strategy officer and one of his board nominees, with support from other members of the dissident slate. They are seeking candidates with experience in retail, consumer brands, digital commerce and corporate turnarounds. That search does not give Bergeron or his nominees authority to replace Kathwari. A CEO appointment requires board approval, and shareholders will decide the board's composition at Ethan Allen's 2026 annual meeting. Bergeron launched the proxy contest in August, criticizing the company's succession planning, strategy and financial performance. Ethan Allen has defended its leadership, investments and record of returning capital to shareholders, including a recently declared $3-per-share special dividend totaling roughly $76 million.
eBay makes Ambassador affiliate links easier with app, Smart Share updates. Published: Sep 21 2026 Updated: Sep 21 2026 eBay is making it easier for Ambassadors to create and share affiliate links, adding native link creation inside the eBay mobile app and bringing the Partner Network's Smart Share Chrome extension to Ambassador users. The company announced the updates in a September 17 email, telling Ambassadors they can now create affiliate links directly from the latest version of the eBay app on iOS or Android and use Smart Share while browsing the marketplace in Chrome. You can now create affiliate links directly from the eBay app with the latest version of the app on iOS or Android. Value Added Resource has also introduced Smart Share for Ambassadors. This Chrome extension allows you to create affiliate links directly while browsing eBay. The native app integration removes one of the more obvious friction points from a program eBay has pitched as a simplified, mobile-friendly alternative to the traditional eBay Partner Network, allowing Ambassadors to create links where they are already browsing instead of going back through the separate Ambassador portal. eBay launched the Ambassador program in April 2025, initially limiting access to existing EPN affiliates before expanding it to all U.S. users several months later. The company specifically positioned Ambassador as a self-service option for buyers, sellers and smaller creators, while describing EPN as geared more toward managed partners, professional marketers and publishers using advanced affiliate tools. Smart Share moves Ambassador a little closer to the tools already available through the traditional Partner Network. The Chrome extension has long allowed EPN affiliates to create tracking links without having to copy a URL and run it through the Partner Network portal. Users can browse eBay, click the Smart Share extension and generate an affiliate link from the page they are viewing, with eBay also offering a Deal Flag feature to identify commissionable items. Now Ambassadors are getting their own version of that tool, giving them another way to create links without going back through the dedicated Ambassador portal. The company has steadily added more features since launch, including more control over Ambassador storefronts and curated collections late last year. Those updates allowed affiliates to pin favorite collections, display more saved items on their storefront and more easily remove sold-out inventory, addressing some early complaints about managing the curated pages. The wider Ambassador rollout came shortly after eBay killed off the longtime EPN Seller Incentive in August 2025, ending payments that had allowed participating U.S. sellers to effectively offset Final Value Fees when their own inventory sold through qualifying affiliate links. Ambassador's more limited assortment and commission structure meant it was not a direct replacement for sellers who had relied on the old incentive. Have you tried the new Ambassador link tools?
