Elucid

Elucid

AI-powered plaque analysis for cardiovascular imaging

Overview

Elucid Bioimaging provides an AI-powered SaaS platform that helps clinicians assess cardiovascular disease. Its PlaqueIQ tool non-invasively analyzes coronary CT angiography to create a 3D model of arteries and quantify plaque, including high-risk features like lipid-rich necrotic cores, with the AI trained on paired imaging and histology data. The product is regulated, with FDA clearance and CE marking, and it distinguishes itself by grounding its analysis in histology-based references rather than simple image features. The company aims to expand commercialization in North America and Europe to support precision cardiology, preventive treatment, and reduced cardiovascular events.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • January 2026 CPT 75577 created paid reimbursement for coronary plaque analysis.
  • Aetna, Humana, Cigna, and UnitedHealthcare now cover plaque analysis for many members.
  • Elucid expanded visibility at SCCT 2026 and won a 2026 MedTech Breakthrough award.

What critics are saying

  • HeartFlow owns guideline-backed FFRCT; Elucid’s physiology product remains pending in 2026.
  • Plaque analysis reimbursement depends on CMS and payer policies rewritten in 2026.
  • If hospitals prefer Cleerly or HeartFlow, Elucid becomes a niche plaque vendor.

What makes Elucid unique

  • Plaque-IQ uses histology-validated CT Virtual Histology, unlike threshold-based plaque software.
  • Elucid added lesion-level coronary and carotid inspection in April 2026.
  • Kelly Huang leads a company with cleared plaque software and pending FFRCT.

Elucid launches lesion inspection tool for coronary and carotid plaque analysis

Elucid has launched a new Lesion Inspection Tool for its Plaque-IQ software suite, enabling physicians to analyse coronary and carotid plaque composition at the lesion level. The tool provides detailed quantification of plaque types, including high-risk features like lipid-rich necrotic core, supporting more precise clinical decision-making. The Boston-based AI medical technology company's Plaque-IQ is the only plaque analysis technology validated against histology, the gold standard for plaque characterisation. Powered by CT-Virtual Histology, it noninvasively quantifies and classifies coronary and carotid plaque using CTA scans. The tool allows physicians to interrogate any lesion or region and access quantitative results for specific segments, helping identify features associated with heart attack and stroke risk.
