Alabama rehab provider cuts ribbon on $61M inpatient rehab hospital in Bangor. September 25, 2026 Encompass Health Corp. (NYSE: EHC), an inpatient rehabilitation provider based in Birmingham, Ala., cut the ribbon Thursday on a 54,000-square-foot, 50-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Bangor. The nation's largest owner and operator of inpatient rehabilitation hospitals said it expects to open the hospital, at 1017 Union St., to patients in early October. The project cost was approximately $61 million, a spokesperson told Mainebiz. Encompass has a national footprint of 177 facilities in 39 states and Puerto Rico, and over 225,000 patients annually. 'Significant need' The hospital will provide rehabilitative services that aim to help patients recovering from strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations and complex orthopedic conditions regain function and independence. Patients will receive a minimum of three hours of intensive therapy five days each week, frequent physician visits and 24-hour nursing care. "The advanced level of care we will provide patients is significantly needed in Bangor," said Troy Trejo, Encompass Health Bangor's CEO. Activities suite. Hospital amenities include private patient rooms, a therapy gym with advanced rehabilitation technologies, "activities of daily living" suite, in-house dialysis suite, therapy courtyard, dining room, in-house pharmacy and dayroom areas. An interdisciplinary team of specialized nurses, therapists and physicians will provide physical, occupational and speech therapies to restore functional ability and quality of life. The project team included Chicago architect Perkins & Will and Birmingham, Ala., construction firm Robins & Morton. Hiring has begun, with approximately 160 employees in the first year. Encompass Health Bangor is the company's first wholly owned hospital in Maine. Encompass Health is expanding its presence in Montgomery County, Texas, with two hospital projects in the greater Houston area. The company will open its first small-format inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Conroe, a 24-bed facility operating as a satellite of its existing Woodlands hospital, expected to open in late 2027. The small-format model allows Encompass Health to extend care into growing communities whilst leveraging resources from established hospitals. The company also plans to construct a 60-bed replacement hospital on its existing Woodlands campus, featuring all private patient rooms and enhanced amenities, scheduled to open in 2029. Both facilities will provide rehabilitation care for patients recovering from strokes, neurological conditions, brain and spinal cord injuries, and complex orthopaedic conditions. Encompass Health operates 177 hospitals across 39 states and Puerto Rico.
