That's starting to change. A new prototype developed by semiconductor startup Equal1, unveiled in partnership with Dell at Dell Technologies World 2026, could mark the first real step toward bringing quantum computing into the enterprise data center using existing business infrastructures. A Quantum Computer Built Like Traditional Data Center Hardware One of the biggest obstacles to enterprise quantum adoption has always been the infrastructure gap. Traditional quantum computers often require highly customized rooms with complicated cooling systems. They also demand large amounts of power. Equal1's approach to enterprise data center integration sidesteps those issues by designing the hardware around what already exists. The new system is a rack-mounted quantum computer built to fit inside a standard 19-inch server rack, the format already used by most enterprise facilities. The prototype also reportedly works with standard power outlet compatibility, another major shift from the power-intensive infrastructure often associated with experimental quantum hardware. While this may not suddenly make quantum computing simple, it does make it far more realistic for future commercial environments. Cooling has also been a big obstacle to introducing quantum computing into the enterprise data center, as systems operate at extremely low temperatures, around -459 degrees Fahrenheit. That level of cooling is necessary to keep the qubits stable enough to perform calculations. Equal1 appears to have achieved that in rack-mounted form with a standard power input. Silicon Spin Qubits Make This System Different The prototype system uses a hybrid quantum computing architecture that combines classical computing components with quantum processing units built on silicon spin qubits, a technology designed to make quantum systems more compact and scalable. The hybrid approach works because quantum computers aren't expected to replace everyday business servers anytime soon. The system handles certain tasks with classical computing power and offloads specific workloads that conventional systems struggle to process to the quantum processor. Examples could eventually include advanced logistics modeling, pharmaceutical simulations, financial risk analysis, cybersecurity research, and large-scale optimization tasks. Equal1 Is a Step Toward the Future For a long time, the conversation around enterprise quantum was dominated by questions of whether it was even physically possible to shrink and stabilize these systems enough for real-world use. The announcement by Equal1 and Dell signals that quantum computing in the enterprise data center is no longer just a theoretical goal. The hardware is catching up to the concept. Instead of building massive standalone machines disconnected from standard IT operations, developers are now considering how quantum systems could fit within existing high-performance computing infrastructure. That change could eventually make adoption easier for organizations already operating large enterprise data centers. However, this is still a prototype. Equal1 and Dell haven't announced a commercial release date. As quantum computing enterprise data center solutions continue to evolve, businesses may eventually see these systems become part of mainstream high-performance computing infrastructure rather than isolated scientific experiments.

RacQ, the next generation evolution of Equal1's Bell-1 Server, is a rack-mounted silicon-spin quantum computing designed for deployment within a standard 19-inch data center rack. Hybrid Quantum-Classical Computing (HQCC) Integration HQCC enables high-impact applications, including investment risk analysis, materials simulation and supply chain optimization. In these workflows, classical and quantum workloads operate as a single system. Intensive subroutines are offloaded to the RacQ quantum processor, while pre- and post-processing remain on the classical compute server. This integration allows organizations to prioritize high-impact use cases and move hybrid systems directly into production. Experience RacQ and HQCC In Action Equal1 and Dell Technologies are demonstrating how HQCC could be deployed in a data center next week at Dell Technologies World in the Modern Data Center area of the Solutions Expo. In this experimental prototype, Equal1's RacQ integrates a silicon quantum computer with a Dell PowerEdge R770 server, a PowerSwitch networking environment and Dell's Quantum Intelligent Orchestrator - a prototype created to manage and schedule workloads across heterogeneous compute resources - all within a standard data center rack design. While the demonstration is a research collaboration, it shows how HQCC is indeed possible in HPC environments and sets a practical benchmark for low-disruption QPU integration. RacQ Highlights * Standard Power: It plugs into a standard single-phase electrical socket, consuming only 1600 W - comparable to a high-end classical server. * Advanced Cooling: It features an integrated, self-contained, closed-cycle cryocooler that maintains an internal temperature of 0.3 Kelvin without external infrastructure. * Compact Footprint: Weighing 400 kg, the hybrid quantum classical compute device fits perfectly into a standard Dell 42U frame. For too long, quantum computing has remained isolated in specialist environments, custom-built and disconnected from standard infrastructure. System has been designed to fit inside a conventional 19-inch rack May 15, 2026 Irish quantum computing startup Equal1 has unveiled RacQ, a rack-mounted silicon-spin quantum computer powered by UnityQ, the company's CMOS quantum system-on-chip. In a statement, Equal1 said RacQ builds on its earlier Bell-1 system, extending the company's quantum technology into a standard data center form factor designed for hybrid quantum-classical computing. Described by the company as a world first, Equal1 said the system has been designed to fit inside a conventional 19-inch rack, meaning it can be plugged into existing data centers using only a standard 1.6kW power socket. Weighing 400kg (882lb), RacQ also features an integrated, self-contained, closed-cycle cryocooler that maintains an internal temperature of 0.3 Kelvin (-272.85°C/-459.13°F) without external infrastructure. Equal1 said it will demonstrate how RacQ can be deployed in a data center environment by integrating it with a Dell PowerEdge R770 server and a PowerSwitch networking environment at Dell Technology's annual conference in Las Vegas next week. Spun out of University College Dublin in 2018, Equal1 has been developing a quantum processor using silicon spin qubits, a technology that has been co-developed by TNO and Delft University of Technology. The company unveiled its Bell-1 quantum server in March 2025. Named after John Stewart Bell, the Belfast-born physicist whose work focused on quantum mechanics, Bell-1 is a silicon-based offering that operates at 1,600W and slots "seamlessly" into existing data centers and high-performance computing (HPC) environments by plugging into standard electrical sockets.
