Civo and Era4 launch Sovereign AI cloud offering in the UK. Housed in Era4 data centers, using Civo cloud platform June 09, 2026 Civo and Era4 are partnering on a sovereign AI cloud solution in the UK. The two will develop a full-stack AI offering for UK organizations, combining Era4's data center network and Civo's CivoStack software. Era4 was founded as Carbon3.ai in June 2025, rebranding earlier this year. According to the company, it currently has around 50MW of power capacity in the UK from low-carbon energy, and a "clear pathway" to more than 500MW of hybrid power. Mark Boost, CEO at Civo, said: "Sovereignty without developer accessibility is a bottleneck, and accessibility without green power is unsustainable. By deploying Civo's cloud architecture natively inside Era4's localized data centers, we are giving the UK Sovereign AI Fund, regional accelerators, and enterprise innovators exactly what they've been waiting for: a true, top-tier alternative to the US hyperscalers that runs entirely on automated, domestic, and sustainable foundations." Karl Havard, chief commercial officer at Era4, added: "The UK desperately needs to increase its sovereign AI infrastructure footprint. We are now deploying a solution the UK can truly call its own. The partnership enables the deployment of CivoStack on our lower-carbon network of data centers, transforming raw silicon into an instantly consumable, Kubernetes-enabled powerhouse. This isn't a reseller arrangement; it's two British champions co-building the future of sustainable national infrastructure." The platform will use Nvidia HGX B300 AI chips. Era4 previously launched a sovereign AI platform in September 2025 in partnership with HPE, Vast Data, and WWT to develop what it calls the "national grid for AI," aiming to deploy a nationwide mesh of data centers powered by off-grid renewable energy. That platform was said to be based on HPE Private Cloud AI. Era4, since its founding, has pursued several data center projects. The company claims to already have more than 40 brownfield and industrial sites in its portfolio across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Earlier this month the company filed to develop a data center at the Shelford Farm Estate on Broad Oak Road in Canterbury. Era4 also has projects planned in Derbyshire and Newport, and recently saw a proposal for a site in Anglesey rejected. The company has links to Valencia, sharing executives. Valencia Energy is part of the Valencia Waste group, one of the UK's largest landfill operators. The company has seven active landfills and more than a dozen closed sites. Era4 and Valencia have previously announced a partnership to deploy data center capacity at Valencia landfill sites, utilizing gas. More in cloud & hyperscale.
Carbon3.ai to invest £1bn to build the UK's first renewable-powered Data Centre network. A newly formed UK firm, Carbon3.ai, has announced a £1 billion ($1.3 billion) project: building a nationwide network of data centres powered entirely by domestic renewable energy. If successful, this could serve as a model for sovereign AI infrastructure for British enterprise, research, and public institutions. The company plans to repurpose existing industrial and energy-generation assets across the UK into high-performance compute hubs. Carbon3.ai says the £1 bn investment reflects the estimated cost to convert 50 MW of secured renewable baseload generation into data-centre capacity. Carbon3.ai is partnering with HPE, Vast Data, and WWT to develop the "national grid for AI," an idea based on HPE Private Cloud AI. According to its founders, the project will deliver a fully sustainable "AI mesh" which will be owned, powered, and secured domestically. This will reduce reliance on foreign-controlled cloud infrastructure, while at the same time offering low-carbon compute capacity. CEO Tom Humphreys noted, "The UK's competitiveness in AI depends on infrastructure that is truly sovereign, sustainable, and resilient." "It's not enough to invest in data centres," he continued. "We need a national backbone for AI that's owned, powered, and secured right here at home." Rising energy demand sharpens the case for renewable compute. Globally, data-centre energy demand is already high and continuing to rise. According to a 2025 technical review, data centres are responsible for about 1.7 % of global electricity consumption. In the UK, data centres consume approximately 2.5 % of national electricity. Expanding this infrastructure with renewable energy will help to meet increasing demand while addressing sustainability and emissions goals. As the same review notes, data centres could also provide flexibility for power systems, supporting broader transitions toward net-zero energy grids. Carbon3.ai says the £1 billion ($1.3 billion) investment reflects the estimated cost to convert 50 MW of secured renewable baseload generation into data-centre capacity. Carbon3.ai is partnering with HPE, Vast Data, and WWT to develop the "national grid for AI," an idea based on HPE Private Cloud AI. One of the announced projects: a modular "AI data centre" next to a landfill-gas-powered energy site in Derbyshire. The plan is to draw power from the adjacent facility to create an off-grid, renewable-powered compute hub. According to Carbon3.ai, the finished network could host up to 100,000 GPUs across multiple sites, offering scalable, low-latency, AI-ready compute for enterprises, public institutions, and researchers. This initiative could reshape how UK operators approach data centre projects. First, instead of retrofitting existing data centres, Carbon3.ai is building new facilities based on renewable power from the start. Then, by owning power generation and infrastructure, operators may be better positioned to comply with evolving ESG expectations, government policies, and energy-supply constraints. And a domestic sovereign network could reduce dependence on foreign cloud providers and improve data governance for sensitive workloads. Finally, this could offer a workable solution to the increasing stress on the power grid. As data-centre demand grows, integrating them into national energy planning will become increasingly important. Join Data Centre world. 4-5 march 2026, excel london.
