Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • The August 5, 2026 WEBCAT grant attacks wallet and dapp front-end compromise directly.
  • Treasury staking of about 70,000 ETH generates operating yield without forced principal sales.
  • July 29, 2026 board expansion added pcaversaccio, strengthening security and privacy governance.

What critics are saying

  • June 23, 2026 layoffs cut 54 staff and 40% of budget, shrinking execution capacity.
  • Senior exits left Bastian Aue overseeing operations after Tomasz Stańczak and Hsiao-Wei Wang departed.
  • If client funding stays fragmented after April 2026, Ethereum core development loses coordination and credibility.

What makes Ethereum Foundation unique

  • Ethereum Foundation stewards Ethereum’s core protocol, treasury policy, and security from Zurich and remote teams.
  • Its 1TS program funds compiler verification, WEBCAT, and other ecosystem security infrastructure.
  • Argot funding through 2027 preserves Solidity maintenance, formal verification, and developer tooling.

Ethereum Foundation grants $100K for Vyper compiler verification to protect $2B in DeFi

The Ethereum Foundation has allocated $100,000 to develop a formally verified compiler for Vyper, a smart contract language securing over $2 billion in DeFi protocols including Curve and Yearn. The grant is part of a $600,000 security initiative targeting the gap between source code and compiled bytecode. Formal verification mathematically proves the compiler translates code accurately, preventing bugs that audits cannot catch. In 2023, a Vyper compiler vulnerability caused $70 million in losses across Curve pools despite correct source code. The project involves the Foundation for Verified Software and the Vyper development team. It builds on research using HOL4, a mathematical proof assistant. The foundation has requested additional ecosystem contributions to expand the initiative's scope beyond the initial allocation.

Ethereum Foundation funds WEBCAT to verify front-end code for wallets and dapps

The Ethereum Foundation is funding WEBCAT, an open-source tool developed by the Freedom of the Press Foundation, through its Trillion Dollar Security initiative. WEBCAT enables browsers to verify whether a website's code matches the developer's published version, helping detect supply-chain attacks and unauthorised modifications. The tool addresses a critical vulnerability in Web3 security. While smart contracts typically undergo audits, front-end interfaces remain exposed to phishing and other attacks. WEBCAT aims to close this gap by providing transparent verification, similar to SSL certificates for traditional websites. The Freedom of the Press Foundation brings expertise from projects like SecureDrop. As Ethereum's ecosystem expands with dapps handling billions in assets, front-end verification could become standard security practice. The integration timeline remains unspecified, but gradual adoption is expected in coming months.

Ethereum Foundation appoints security researcher pcaversaccio to board amid leadership reshuffles

The Ethereum Foundation has appointed security researcher pcaversaccio (pc) to its board for an initial one-year voluntary term. He joins President Aya Miyaguchi, Founder Vitalik Buterin, and Swiss counsel Patrick Storchenegger as the foundation's fourth board member. Pcaversaccio co-founded and leads SEAL 911, the ecosystem's rapid-response network for hacks and exploits, and has advised the foundation through its Silviculture Society. He also authored influential essays on Ethereum's values, including The Ethereum Cypherpunk Manifesto (2024) and Ethereum Privacy: The Road to Self-Sovereignty (2025). The appointment follows recent departures from the foundation, including Francesco D'Amato leaving for Ethlabs and the privacy team spinning out as EthSystems. The foundation recently implemented a 20% staff reduction as part of its restructuring towards a leaner, endowment-style model.

Ethereum Foundation slashes workforce 20%, budget 40% as ecosystem decentralises

The Ethereum Foundation has cut approximately 20% of its workforce and plans to reduce its annual budget by 40%. Several new organisations will now share responsibility for developing key segments of the blockchain alongside the Ethereum community. The foundation will focus on network security whilst newly formed entities handle commercial development and other functions. These include Ethereum Institutional, which helps financial institutions build stablecoin integrations; EthSystems, focused on privacy technologies for institutions; and Ethlabs, which addresses scalability and interoperability. The restructuring aims to decentralise the Ethereum ecosystem. Proponents argue this makes the network more resilient by eliminating single points of failure and strengthening resistance to censorship. Ethereum has operated without downtime for over a decade. The changes position the foundation as one node amongst many rather than a central authority governing the world's second-largest cryptocurrency.
