Wednesday, September 16, 2026 12:24 AM NEW YORK - Century Health, a company that applies artificial intelligence (AI) to real-world clinical data to accelerate research, and Eye Health America, a leading integrated eyecare platform in the Southeastern United States, have together announced a collaboration that aims to transform years of clinical data into research-grade datasets that support real-world evidence generation and life sciences research for chronic retinal conditions. Through this partnership, the companies "will create one of the most detailed longitudinal datasets on chronic retinal disease with insights from more than 200,000 de-identified records," the announcement stated. "The clinical data that matters most in retinal disease, like progression measurements, imaging findings, treatment response over years, has remained locked inside ophthalmology practices," said Vish Srivastava, co-founder and CEO of Century Health. "We're thrilled to partner with Eye Health America to change that, and to bring this depth of real-world evidence to life sciences researchers." In making the announcement, the companies pointed to disease progression measurements that they said can be "trapped" inside PDF attachments and scanned reports rather than entered into an electronic health record (EHR) as structured data. As a result, studies that rely only on structured EHR fields have the potential to miss critical aspects of the clinical picture, they noted, creating an incomplete view of how retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) actually progress and how patients respond to treatment in routine care. The Century Health Abstraction and Retrieval Model, CHARM, an AI model, will enable Eye Health America to use these unstructured reports, the companies said, some going back more than a decade, to extract key values for quantitative retinal measurements and disease progression metrics. CHARM then converts this historical data into structured datasets for research. Drawing on more than 200,000 de-identified records, this partnership will create a detailed longitudinal dataset on chronic retinal disease that can be used to support life sciences research into how these conditions respond to real-world variables, the companies said. "Caring for patients with chronic eye conditions means following subtle changes over many years, yet much of that longitudinal history isn't available for large-scale research," said Cathleen McCabe, MD, chief medical officer at Eye Health America. "By transforming more clinical history into usable data, we can better understand how these diseases progress, identify which treatments work best for different patients, and ultimately improve the care we deliver."
