FedEx Freight is a North American carrier that moves less-than-truckload (LTL) freight, meaning shipments that are heavy enough for trucking but don’t need a full trailer. It runs the largest LTL network in the United States, created from Viking Freight and American Freightways through prior acquisitions, and it serves shipments within the U.S. and across borders to Canada and Mexico with a single bill of lading and a unified pickup/delivery system. Its services include FedEx Freight Priority for fast transit (about 1–3 days) and FedEx Freight Economy for cheaper, slower moves (about 3–6 days), along with time-definite options like A.M. Delivery, residential and retail delivery, and FedEx Custom Critical for high-value or hazardous shipments. In December 2024, FedEx announced plans to spin off FedEx Freight into a separate public company to unlock value and sharpen focus on the LTL market.

Wesley Salley named TMCSuperTech 2026 Grand Champion. FedEx Freight technicians sweep top three positions at national Skills Competition. Wesley Salley, a senior technician with FedEx Freight from Round Rock, Texas, has been named the TMCSuperTech 2026 Grand Champion at the American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council National Technician Skills Competitions. The annual event recognizes professional technicians who demonstrate advanced knowledge and hands-on expertise across critical commercial vehicle maintenance categories. The competition was held September 20-21 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh. Participants were tested through a series of technical skills stations designed to evaluate their ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain modern commercial vehicles. Categories included electrical systems, brakes, wheel ends, advanced driver assistance systems, fifth wheels, remote diagnostics, electric vehicle safety, and other areas essential to fleet maintenance. Salley also earned first place in the Fasteners skills station, adding an individual category victory to his overall Grand Champion title. His performance placed him ahead of a highly competitive group of technicians representing fleets and maintenance organizations from across the trucking industry. FedEx Freight had a particularly strong showing in the professional competition. Kelby Bentley, who previously won the TMCSuperTech Grand Champion title in 2019, finished second overall. Fellow FedEx Freight technician Mitchell Buelow placed third. The three results gave FedEx Freight all of the top three individual positions in the final standings. FedEx Freight also captured the team championship, represented by Salley and Buelow. Hogan Truck Leasing finished second in the team standings, while TravelCenters of America placed third. TMC Executive Director Robert Braswell said Salley demonstrated the technical skills, knowledge, and professionalism expected from competitors at the national event. The competition is designed not only to recognize experienced technicians but also to highlight the increasing complexity and importance of commercial vehicle maintenance as fleets adopt new safety systems, diagnostics, and electric vehicle technologies. The event also included the TMCFutureTech National Student Technician Skills Competition, which focuses on students preparing for careers in commercial vehicle maintenance. Corbin White of the University of Northwestern Ohio earned first place overall. Madison Boone of Forsyth Technical Community College finished second, while Jeffrey Jackson of Francis Tuttle Technology Center placed third. TMCSuperTech gives technicians an opportunity to demonstrate specialized skills while showcasing careers in fleet maintenance. TMC represents technicians, fleets, manufacturers, suppliers, educators, and other industry professionals and develops recommended practices used to improve commercial vehicle maintenance and equipment performance.
Wes Salley leads FedEx Freight sweep at TMCSuperTech. Texas technician captures grand champion title and inaugural Champion of States award. Features Editor September 22, 2026 8:35 AM, EDT | Updated: September 22, 2026 10:41 AM, EDT FedEx Freight Senior Technician Wes Salley was grand champion at the 2026 TMCSuperTech competition. (American Trucking Associations) Key takeaways: PITTSBURGH - FedEx Freight Senior Technician Wes Salley entered the 2026 TMCSuperTech competition hoping to perform well enough to be proud of his effort. He left as grand champion, leading a FedEx Freight sweep of the top three overall spots at the skills competition held during American Trucking Associations' Technology & Maintenance Council Fall Meeting on Sept. 21. Salley was joined on the overall podium by FedEx Freight Senior Technician Kelby Bentley, who finished second, and Senior Technician Mitchell Buelow, who placed third. Salley's victory also earned him the inaugural Champion of States award, which recognized the Texas technician as the state champion with the highest overall score. "The competition this year is extremely fierce," Salley said after earning grand champion honors. "A lot of the guys from FedEx Freight put in a lot of hours and a lot of work... I feel that I've exceeded my own expectations." Salley also captured first place in the fasteners station. He credited his performance to an intensive training regimen and a strong culture of collaboration within the FedEx Freight team. "We spend quite a bit of time training. We get to know each other really well," Salley said. "There's a lot of camaraderie with the team. We put in a lot of hours outside of just work hours to get ready for this, to do what we do." That shared commitment, he said, helped the team sharpen its skills while building the confidence needed to perform under pressure. This year's field was narrowed through written exams and hands-on work across multiple skills stations. (American Trucking Associations) This year's format added to that pressure. Salley said the move to a single day of hands-on competition tested competitors' stamina and focus. "The single day hands-on was definitely an adjustment. It made for a long day," he said, adding that the key was mental discipline. "Keeping focused, keeping steady, and not letting one rough station or one bad patch carry through the rest of the day, keeping your eyes on the prize, made for a good win." Salley said he felt strong at several stations even when he did not finish first, and he expects some results may exceed his own impressions once he reviews the scores. He said the grand champion title represents both a personal milestone and a reflection of the broader FedEx Freight program supporting its competitors. This year's field was narrowed through written exams and hands-on work across multiple skills stations, said Randy Patterson, TMCSuperTech competition chairman. Patterson reminded attendees that SuperTech is far more than a "one-day deal," noting that organizers begin planning the next year's event before the current competition ends. He said equipment begins arriving on Thursday, and the exhibit hall is converted into a competition floor over Friday and Saturday. Patterson said 169 judges and scorecard runners supported 101 competitors across 24 stations, backed by a core team that works year-round on scoring, logistics and station design. A judge watches a competitor. There were 101 competitors across 24 stations. (American Trucking Associations) "We spend all year long preparing for you because you deserve it," he told the technicians during the awards ceremony. Among the most demanding contests was the electronic engine diagnostics station, where last year's grand champion, FedEx Freight's Matthew Sloan, earned top honors. The team title capped a strong night for FedEx Freight, with Salley and Buelow winning the TMCSuperTech Team category. FedEx Freight ranks No. 4 on the Transport Topics Top 100 list of the largest for-hire carriers in North America. In one of the most competitive TMCFutureTech contests in recent years, Corbin White of the University of Northwestern Ohio captured first place after a tie-breaking scenario with second-place finisher Madison Boone of Forsyth Technical Community College. Boone finished second in last year's competition. Jeffrey Jackson of Francis Tuttle Technology Center placed third. FedEx Freight led all fleets with six station wins, followed by TravelCenters of America with five and Hogan Truck Leasing with four. Clark Power Services captured two station awards, while Publix Super Markets, Feliciano Fleet Services and Transwest Truck each earned one station win.
FedEx Freight turns to NASCAR to build standalone brand with truck series deal. FedEx Freight will also become an official partner of NASCAR and its exclusive freight shipping partner across the US, Canada and Mexico, effective January 1, 2027. September 19, 2026 NASCAR has entered into a long-term entitlement partnership with FedEx Freight that will see the organisation's Truck Series renamed the NASCAR FedEx Freight Truck Series from the 2027 season, bringing together one of North America's largest freight carriers and a motorsport property built around the trucking industry. Under the agreement, FedEx Freight will also become an official partner of NASCAR and its exclusive freight shipping partner across the United States, Canada and Mexico, effective January 1, 2027. The partnership marks the first sponsorship platform of this scale for FedEx Freight since it became an independent, publicly traded company in June 2026 following its separation from FedEx Corporation. The company will use NASCAR's national reach to build awareness of its standalone brand while strengthening relationships with customers, employees and business leaders. Craig Stimmel, SVP and Chief Commercial Officer, NASCAR, said, "FedEx Freight choosing NASCAR for a brand investment of this magnitude says a lot about where our sport is today and the value our platform can deliver to businesses looking to grow. And there may not be a more natural pairing than FedEx Freight and the NASCAR Truck Series. This is a series built on trucks, toughness and people who compete incredibly hard to deliver every single week. That same grit, reliability and get-it-done mentality is embedded in FedEx Freight. As they continue to establish their identity as an independent company, we have an incredible opportunity to put that brand in front of millions of fans while creating real business value throughout the NASCAR industry." John Smith, President and CEO, FedEx Freight, added, "Some partnerships just make sense. As FedEx Freight moves forward in its next chapter as an independent company, we are focused on opportunities that strengthen our brand and support our long-term growth strategy, and we are confident the NASCAR FedEx Freight Truck Series will deliver. "NASCAR and its loyal fanbase represent the same commitment to safety, hard work, reliability and teamwork that has defined our company for decades. NASCAR provides a powerful platform to connect with customers, engage our dedicated team members and introduce the FedEx Freight brand to millions of passionate fans nationwide. This is a series built on trucks and being number one. It is a relationship that reflects our confidence in the future and our commitment to building a strong company positioned for continued success." For FedEx Freight, the agreement extends beyond naming rights. The partnership will include customer engagement, employee initiatives, community programmes and targeted activations in markets surrounding the company's distribution locations. NASCAR said the platform is intended to support brand awareness, B2B lead generation, employee recognition and community engagement. FedEx Freight operates a network of more than 365 locations, supported by approximately 40,000 employees and nearly 30,000 vehicles across North America. The company's freight-shipping relationship with NASCAR therefore adds an operational component to the sponsorship alongside its media and marketing rights. The agreement will replace Craftsman as the Truck Series entitlement partner after the 2026 season. For NASCAR, the deal demonstrates how its commercial offering is expanding beyond traditional sponsorship visibility to include B2B relationships, operational partnerships and year-round brand engagement.
