Flynn

Flynn

Open-source PaaS for deploying apps

Overview

Flynn is an open-source Platform as a Service (PaaS) that lets developers deploy, scale, and manage applications and databases on their own infrastructure. Built with Go and container-based technology, it provides a self-hosted alternative to Heroku with Git-based automated deployments and built-in PostgreSQL and MySQL databases plus automatic load balancing. It can run on a single server or across multiple nodes for high availability, giving users control over hosting and resources. Its goal is to offer a simple, scalable way to run apps on self-hosted infrastructure, delivering a familiar Heroku-like workflow with on-premises flexibility.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Archived GitHub docs preserve Flynn's architecture and operational patterns for teams in 2026.
  • Its Go and container-based design still teaches lightweight PaaS tradeoffs to builders.
  • The read-only repo on September 4, 2021 freezes a reproducible reference implementation.

What critics are saying

  • GitHub archived Flynn on September 4, 2021, ending development and security updates.
  • Public binary release hosting and cluster discovery shut down, breaking new deployments immediately.
  • Kubernetes, Heroku, and newer self-hosted PaaS tools have permanently displaced Flynn's market.

What makes Flynn unique

  • Flynn bundled Git deploys, databases, and load balancing into one PaaS.
  • It targeted self-hosted Heroku simplicity, not Kubernetes complexity, a niche now crowded.
  • YC joined August 2014 and seed funding validated the original workflow.
