Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Nature publication on May 19, 2026 gives Robin immediate legitimacy with scientists and funders.
  • June 4, 2026 platform launch opened public access to superhuman literature search and synthesis.
  • The macular-degeneration discovery shows automated agents can generate testable biology, strengthening fellowship recruiting.

What critics are saying

  • FutureHouse depends on Schmidt, Open Philanthropy, NSF, and AI Safety Institute funding.
  • Phoenix remains experimental on June 4, 2026, and FutureHouse admits it makes more mistakes.
  • Robin’s macular-degeneration result is cell-based, not clinical; reproducibility failures would kill credibility and adoption.

What makes FutureHouse unique

  • Robin, published in Nature on May 19, 2026, automates hypothesis-to-validation discovery end-to-end.
  • FutureHouse’s platform bundles Crow, Falcon, Owl, and Phoenix for science-specific literature and chemistry tasks.
  • Its nonprofit model and fellowship program attract researchers without VC-style pressure for near-term revenue.

AI drug discovery system Robin identifies novel macular degeneration treatment through automated testing

Two AI systems, Robin and Crow, developed by FutureHouse, have successfully completed drug-retargeting tasks for macular degeneration. Robin formed hypotheses about disease mechanisms, suggested cell lines and culture conditions, and evaluated 30 candidate drugs through automated reports reviewed by human experts. The system includes Finch, a tool that automates evaluation of biological screening assays like flow cytometry and RNA-seq. Robin identified a novel hypothesis that increasing retinal cells' ability to clear debris could protect against the disease and found a drug providing that effect. Tools designed for scientific literature proved crucial. Replacing Crow with OpenAI's o4-mini increased hallucinated references from zero to 45 percent. When compared to OpenAI's research-focused tool, all drugs it suggested that Robin hadn't identified failed to affect cells.
