Kwara launches free cattle insemination scheme to boost milk production. 18 hours ago September 23, 2026 The Kwara State Government has launched a free cattle artificial insemination programme in partnership with Genex URUS American International Animal Breeding Company to improve local cattle breeds and increase milk and dairy production across the state. Geographic Reference The programme, flagged off at TGB Farms in Ganiki, Ilorin South Local Government Area, began with 500 synchronised cattle in September 2026. The state plans to increase the number to 1,000 cattle by the end of the year before expanding the programme to thousands more animals. The government also plans to establish a primary artificial insemination centre in Malete and decentralised facilities in selected rural communities to improve access to breeding services. As part of the initiative, animal production students from the University of Ilorin, Kwara State University (KWASU) and Usmanu Danfodiyo University (UDUS), alongside youths from pastoralist communities, are being trained as certified artificial insemination technicians. According to the Director of Livestock, Ahmed Umar, developing local technicians will help reduce field operating costs, improve estrus synchronisation management and support an estimated 85 per cent pregnancy success rate. Supported by the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) and the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) initiative, the service is being offered free to livestock owners. Each pastoralist and smallholder dairy farmer can have two cattle inseminated at no cost. Genex URUS Team Lead, Saka Shittu, said the programme is using high-quality, dairy-selected elite bull semen to improve milk yields, with plans to extend the artificial insemination service to small ruminants in later phases.
