Goodwin pioneers next-generation operating model for legal services with Microsoft technologies.

Goodwin pioneers next-generation operating model for legal services with Microsoft technologies. Microsoft Foundry to serve as foundation for development of proprietary AI capabilities at scale Professionals Global law firm Goodwin today announced an expansion of its relationship with Microsoft to accelerate its AI strategy and scale the collective judgment of its lawyers, strengthening its ability to anticipate client needs and deliver strategic advice. The collaboration is a natural progression of Goodwin's strategy of deep immersion in the industries it serves and advances its vision for the next operating model for legal services: one designed by lawyers, powered by technology, and informed by clients. "AI is changing what's possible in the practice of law and what our clients can expect from us," said Anthony McCusker, Chair of Goodwin. "We have an opportunity to rethink how we deliver legal services while building on what has always made our lawyers great: their astute judgment, their deep relationships and their industry expertise. Our engagement with Microsoft will help us amplify those strengths." Microsoft Foundry will provide the enterprise AI platform for Goodwin's AI initiatives, offering access to leading AI models through a unified platform for building, customizing, and governing AI applications. At the center of this work is Regina OS, Goodwin's proprietary legal operating system, which brings together matter context, knowledge, and AI capabilities in a single platform that supports how lawyers practice law. Regina OS operates entirely within Goodwin's secure Foundry environment, with consistent governance, quality standards, and guardrails around accuracy, confidentiality, and responsible AI use. "AI is creating new opportunities for professional services organizations to improve how people access knowledge, collaborate, and deliver value," said Brian Willson, Corporate Vice President, Professional Services Industry at Microsoft. "Goodwin's use of Microsoft Copilot and Microsoft Foundry demonstrates how organizations can build, customize, and govern AI solutions while accelerating business value." With this infrastructure in place, the collaboration supports Goodwin's broader efforts to develop and adopt AI across the firm. Goodwin Builders, the firm's lawyer-led innovation model, brings associates and partners together with technologists to redesign legal workflows using AI solutions developed on Foundry. Goodwin is also providing expanded access to Microsoft Copilot firmwide, paired with robust training, to encourage adoption and support effective use of AI. "Our focus is on using AI to bring more of Goodwin's collective expertise to every client," said Eric Tan, chief digital and technology officer of Goodwin. "We're building an environment where our lawyers can more easily draw on the knowledge and experience of the firm, freeing them to focus on solving complex problems and delivering trusted advice to clients."

Goodwin returns to San Diego for tech, life science.

Goodwin returns to San Diego for tech, life science. LAW/LEGAL: Boston Firm Opens Del Mar Office October 1, 2026 DEL MAR - A Boston-based law firm, Goodwin, has reopened a San Diego County office led by partners who have backgrounds in life science and technology. Goodwin's opening of a 7,999-square-foot San Diego County office in Del Mar at 12481 High Bluff Road is part of a broader expansion into California by Goodwin, which also opened offices in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, and Santa Monica, and Orange County. "Renewed demand for biotechnology, life science and technology law has prompted Goodwin to set up another physical location in the (Southern California) region, said Arman Oruc, who co-chairs the Del Mar office with Matt Bresnahan. "The San Diego market is a very important market for the current trajectory of the firm's expansion," Oruc said. "It's a very exciting time in life science and San Diego specifically." Goodwin first opened a San Diego County office in 2007 but closed it in 2013. "The previous office closed in 2013, when the market environment and the firm's circumstances were different," Oruc said. "Today, client demand, exceptional talent, and long-term opportunity make this the right time to invest in Goodwin's San Diego presence." Bresnahan is vice chair of Biocom California's board of directors and a member of the University of San Diego School of Law Board of Visitors. Before joining Goodwin, Oruc was a founder of Biosplice Therapeutics, based in San Diego, and was a board member of the Fleet Science Center. Joining Oruc and Bresnahan in leading the Del Mar office as partners are Matt Wheeler and Ro Park. Prior to becoming a partner at Goodwin, Park was a partner at the San Diego law firm Cooley, an associate attorney with Sullivan & Cromwell, division general counsel of Hanwha Chemical Corp. in South Korea and strategic planning manager and inhouse legal advisor at Mteck Vision Co. in Korea. Wheeler had been an associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and a staff scientist at The Scripps Research Institute. Dynamic market. As of late September, Goodwin's Del Mar office had a staff of 19 lawyers and Bresnahan said that he expects it to continue to grow, although he didn't say how big he expects the staff to become. "I don't think there's a number," Bresnahan said. "We're limited more on finding the right people." Bresnahan said the Goodwin works with companies from their start up, through development of their products, "and take them public and continue to work with them." "We serve clients at every stage of growth," Bresnahan said. "We're starting to see more IPOs and a heavy amount of M&A activity. Activity levels with our team in San Diego is very high right now. We're very, very busy." The Del Mar office as little more than a shell when Goodwin leased it, Oruc said. "We built about 15 dedicated offices and a bunch of other workspaces," Oruc said, adding that the overall office is designed to have large open areas for collaboration and access to an outdoor terrace. "It's probably the nicest office in my entire career," said Oruc, who earned his law degree from the University of California Berkley School of Law and was a partner at Simpson Thatcher & Bartlett and an associate at Clifford Chance US before joining Goodwin. Bresnahan said that he expects that demand for legal services related to life science and technology to be as strong or stronger in 2027 than it was this year. "One trend we're seeing is clients being more willing to commercialize and hang on and not sell the asset until a bit later," Bresnahan said. Goodwin's reopening of a San Diego County office comes as several other law firms have opened offices in the county or expanded. Ron Wood, managing director of the legal recruiting firm Major Lindsel & Africa said that the interest in San Diego includes law firms that are expanding to serve a particular client or industry and others that just see San Diego as a growing market. "It's one of the last markets that's being aggressively developed," Wood said. "Law firms come here when they smell activity." San Diego is full of tech and life science companies Wood said. "You have businesspeople that are coming here. That generates more deals, more litigation, more disputes," Wood said. "It's a dynamic market." Some executives with big law firms also have second homes in San Diego and opt to open an office here to be closer to their work. "It's a great place to be," Wood said. "It's historically been seen as a sleepy town. That has changed. It started in the 70s." Introducing off-the-shelf: A career-long obsession comes to life!

Introducing off-the-shelf: A career-long obsession comes to life! September 24, 2026 If you have been practicing law for a while, you have no doubt experienced a request for information about a particular topic coming from a client or colleague that starts with the phrase "Do you have anything off the shelf?" This request is typically driven by a desire to signal that no special efforts are needed to prepare the subject information, as well as a desire to avoid the cost of creating something from scratch. Throughout my career, I have often been frustrated when I am unable to satisfy this request with some readily available off-the-shelf materials, simply because I never got around to creating such a resource. Rather than wallow in my misery of not being able to deliver the requested information in a readily-available form, I decided to rally my colleagues at Goodwin to help build out its new "Off-the-Shelf" platform. The Goodwin Public Company Advisory Blog notes: Goodwin's Public Company Advisory Practice (PCAP) has created the Off-the-Shelf platform as a centralized resource to assist you in finding the answers to your corporate and securities law questions. Off-the-Shelf is a curated collection of accessible, practitioner-focused resources designed to help public companies address common SEC reporting, disclosure and corporate governance issues with confidence. It includes actionable checklists and guides, concise explanations of regulatory concepts and practical insights informed by market practice and regulatory developments. Resources included in the Off-the-Shelf resource center address important topics such as: - Director onboarding and resignations - Determining who qualifies as an executive officer - Appointing a new principal accounting officer - Executive perquisites - Disclosure considerations relating to material agreements, missed guidance and significant litigation - Launching a share repurchase program - Draft registration statements - Form 8-K reporting requirements Off-the-Shelf is designed to be a growing resource, not a static collection. Its team of experts will continue to expand the collection as regulatory requirements evolve, new disclosure and corporate governance issues emerge and public companies encounter new questions. Its goal is to provide legal teams with practical, readily accessible guidance on the issues that they encounter most often. Thecorporatecounsel has some great plans for making the most of this off-the-shelf platform, and I hope you might find what you are looking for in its library! If there is something that you think should be covered, please let me know. - Dave Lynn
