Aurora's trucks will be truly driverless, the spokeswoman said, although a roadside assistance specialist may sometimes sit in the back seat to assist with issues on longer routes. These employees are not observers and are not in the cab to handle or observe any of the performance, she added. If an employee is not in the cab and the truck encounters an issue, Aurora Driver - the company's self-driving software package - is designed to pull over to a safe location and resume a trip when able, the company said in a July 22 blog. "The Aurora Driver will provide consistent 24/7 service to our customers, making it an important growth lever for our business," said Richard Stocking, CEO of Hirschbach Motor Lines. The deal expands on an existing relatiipnship between the two companies, as Aurora recently transitioned to driverless deliveries to Laredo, Texas, to support one of Hirschbach's key customers. The carrier itself is also a key customer on Aurora's 1,000-mile route between Fort Worth and Phoenix, a critical link for the carrier's coast-to-coast business. To date, the Aurora Driver has driven more than 800,000 miles while delivering over 2,000 loads for Hirschbach.
