Snap acquires AR firm Illumix to boost Specs glasses development

Snap has acquired spatial augmented reality company Illumix to bolster its AR capabilities, particularly for its revamped Specs glasses. The transaction value was not disclosed. Founded in 2017 by CEO Kirin Sinha, Illumix developed AR products bridging digital and physical worlds, including an AR version of "Five Nights at Freddy's". Snap will adopt Illumix's mapping technology and platform whilst retaining most of its staff. The acquisition comes as Snap pushes forward with its standalone AR glasses subsidiary, Specs Inc., launched in January. The company plans to announce further developments at the Augmented World Expo on 16 June. Snap reported Q1 2026 revenue of $1.53 billion, up 12% year-over-year, whilst its daily active user base reached 483 million.
