LG Display develops new OLED production method. Company says technology could provide greater flexibility in OLED manufacturing TWICE Staff ⋅ Published: August 27, 2026 LG Display has developed a new OLED production method that eliminates the use of fine metal masks (FMMs), potentially improving panel brightness, lifespan and power efficiency. Called FMM-less Innovative Pixel Patterning, or FLiPP, the process uses photolithography and precision UV light to pattern RGB pixels. Rather than using a fine metal mask to deposit OLED materials, the process coats RGB pixels in sequence and removes unwanted material through UV etching. According to LG Display, eliminating the FMM allows individual subpixels to be positioned closer together, increasing the portion of the display occupied by RGB pixels. The company says FLiPP improves the aperture ratio by approximately 55%. "Compared with panels produced using FMMs under identical conditions, FLiPP enables displays to increase brightness by 1.6 times, extend lifespan by 2.4 times, and reduce power consumption by 13%," says LG. "This is because FLiPP improves the aperture ratio - the proportion of the total display area occupied by RGB pixels - by approximately 55%." The process also addresses some of the manufacturing limitations associated with FMMs. Fine metal masks can become more difficult to manage as panel sizes increase, while changes to panel size or resolution can require new masks. Removing the masks could also reduce production costs. LG Display demonstrated FLiPP at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2026 in Busan, South Korea. The company has applied the technology to an 8.5-generation mother glass, a format measuring approximately 2,200 x 2,500 millimeters. LG Display says using the larger substrate without the limitations of FMM processing can improve manufacturing efficiency. LG Display has not yet provided a commercial production date for FLiPP. The company said the technology could provide greater flexibility in OLED manufacturing and eventually be applied across a range of display sizes and applications.

Caleb Denison / Digital Trends Anyone waiting for a new iMac may only have a few more months to go. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is preparing an updated model that should be available to buy before the end of 2026. The refresh is expected to bring Apple's upcoming M6 chip alongside some new color options. Beyond that, though, buyers shouldn't expect Apple to reinvent its all-in-one desktop this year. Gurman says the upcoming model won't change much else, suggesting Apple will stick with the familiar 24-inch design rather than introducing a larger screen, OLED panel, or substantial chassis redesign. The iMac could be a natural fit for Apple's unusual M6. The processor upgrade is easily the most interesting part of the upcoming refresh. Apple is reportedly taking a very unusual approach with the M6 generation. Previous reports suggest the company will only release a baseline version of the chip, skipping M6 Pro, Max, and Ultra variants entirely before moving to a broader M7 lineup in 2027. The new chip is expected to bring higher memory bandwidth, a more powerful Neural Engine, and a GPU with up to 12 cores. In other words, the new iMac could still receive a meaningful performance upgrade even if almost everything around the chip stays familiar. The upgrades people really want are still years away. Anyone waiting for a bigger display or OLED panel probably shouldn't expect either feature this year. Apple is still reportedly experimenting with larger and more powerful iMac models, while separate reports suggest Samsung Display and LG Display are developing 24-inch OLED panels for a future version. Current timelines point toward an OLED iMac arriving around 2029. The new iMac may not arrive alongside Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro lineup either. The M4 iMac followed a separate launch schedule in 2024, with Apple announcing it on October 28 and releasing it on November 8, more than a month after the iPhone 16 event. If Apple follows a similar pattern this year, the M6 iMac could instead make its debut sometime in October or November. Waiting may make even more sense given what happened to the current model in June. Apple raised the starting price of the M4 iMac from $1,299 to $1,499, making it considerably more expensive than it was at the start of the year. Unless Apple starts offering substantial discounts on that machine, anyone who doesn't need a new desktop immediately may be better off waiting to see what the M6 model brings. LG Display is reportedly working on the next generation of OLED panels that could bring a noticeable increase in display capabilities. The company is developing a design using as many as five emissive layers, while the most advanced TVs currently use four. The new technology should allow for higher brightness and longer panel lifespan, though it will also be more expensive to manufacture. Five OLED layers aim to deliver higher brightness and longer screen life. According to the Korean site The Elec, LG Display is developing a 5-layer OLED panel that will be the next step in the evolution of Tandem WOLED technology. LG Display's most advanced panels currently use four emissive layers, while the new design will add an extra blue layer. This should allow the manufacturer to increase the panel's capabilities without giving up the advantages of OLED. A greater number of emissive layers could primarily translate into higher brightness and a longer display lifespan. This is especially important for large TVs and monitors, where users increasingly expect very high HDR brightness. At the same time, a more complex design will be more difficult and more expensive to manufacture. LG Display is therefore also developing solutions that go in the opposite direction. According to current reports, Apple plans to introduce an OLED iMac only around 2029. Both LG Display and Samsung Display are working on the appropriate panels and are competing to supply Apple. Samsung is also already developing five-layer Penta Tandem QD-OLED panels, so LG Display will need to offer a solution of sufficiently high quality to win the contract. The technology could, however, find uses beyond Apple computers. If production costs can be optimized appropriately, five-layer OLEDs could in the future also appear in premium TVs and monitors. The firm's FLiPP manufacturing process promises to significantly improve WOLED brightness, efficiency, and longevity, while opening the door to a wider range of possible panel sizes. Aug 21, 2026, 15:55 BST Future WOLED monitors could be in for a serious brightness boost thanks to LG Display's new manufacturing process, which the company describes as being nothing short of a "dream technology." Better still, this new approach comes with benefits to panel efficiency and lifespan too. LG Display, not to be confused with LG Electronics, unveiled its FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning (FLiPP) method during a showcase at International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2026. In short, this approach increases the aperture ratio - the space occupied by RGB subpixels on a panel- by ~55%, providing benefits to screen brightness, efficiency, and more Unless you're intimately familiar with OLED panel production, you may rightly be asking: what does FMM mean? This refers to fine metal mask, which has been a key part of the manufacturing process for this display type for over a decade. These ultra-thin plates serve as stencils, guiding the placement of RGB subpixels through vapour deposition. While FFMs are tried and tested, they're far from perfect. As LG Display explains, every new panel size or resolution demands an entirely new mask, increasing production costs. Then there are problems stemming from sagging, caused by the weight of metal, leading to potential misalignment and colour-mixing defects. LG Display is understandably keeping much of FLiPP's inner workings a trade secret, but did provide some detail into how the approach differs. Rather than relying on stencilled evaporation, this method precisely coats RGB pixels in a given order and position, using photolithography to "erase unnecessary areas during OLED pixel patterning." In addition to offering tantalising boosts to brightness and efficiency, FliPP could also lead to a wider variety of panel resolutions and sizes with lower overhead costs. With no mask constraints or costs to consider, this process could just as easily apply to a 1in display as a 100in panel. Club386 should see the fruits of this freedom materialise in the PC space first, with LG Display committing to using IT applications "such as tablets and monitors" as the test bed for this tech. Taking LG's claims of a 60% brightness boost at face value and applying them to its latest Tandem WOLEDs, as found in the AOC Agon Pro AGP277QKDC, Club386 could see SDR light output reach a peak of ~650nits. This would effectively bridge the gap between OLEDs and LCDs, save those with a Mini LED backlight, further incentivising the adoption of OLED monitors. It's unclear how quickly Club386 can expect to see FLiPP panels hit the market, but this is one innovation I certainly can't wait to see for myself. The FMM method adds to manufacturing costs as expensive new FMMs must be produced whenever the panel size or resolution changes. In addition, due to the inherent properties of metal, large masks tend to sag in the center under their own weight, causing misalignment and sometimes resulting in color-mixing defects. FLiPP eliminates the disadvantages associated with the metal plates used in the FMM process that has been the mainstream OLED manufacturing method for over a decade. The FMM process requires large mother glass substrates, such as 8.6th -generation or other 8th -generation (2,200 x 2,500 mm) substrates, to be divided and processed as half-cut substrates due to the limited size of FMM sticks. After a year of concentrated R&D, LG Display came up with FLiPP as a new OLED manufacturing paradigm. Unlike the FMM method, which may be compared to a stencil art technique where red, green, and blue (RGB) organic materials are evaporated through tiny holes in metal plates, FLiPP coats RGB pixels in order, secures them in precise positions, and incorporates photolithography - employing precision UV light etching to erase unnecessary areas during OLED pixel patterning. Leveraging its existing large-sized Tandem WOLED production infrastructure and technical expertise, FLiPP has allowed LG Display to become the first display company to manufacture FMM-less OLEDs using 8.5th -generation mother glass as a single whole piece.
