Build markets and build resilience: the paradigm shift to build economies and save lives across Africa. 2 hours ago The human cost of conflict is immense. Global headlines document the devastating consequences in the Middle East and territories, Sudan, the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Sahel, and beyond. It is a significant cost in terms of both lives lost and harmed, particularly for children, and communities fragmented. In 2025 alone, at least 6,266 children were reported killed according to the UN report on Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC)[[1]]. Yet beyond the front pages, another, more devastating, crisis is taking lives every day. Diseases linked to unsafe water, sanitation, and hygiene contribute to the deaths of more than 1,000 children under the age of five each day. Two out of five of these children will be from just ten countries of Africa[[2]]. The silent emergency of unsafe water and sanitation receives far less attention but remains one of the most urgent barriers to a healthy, thriving, and prosperous society. Discover more Local News Journalism & News Industry At the recent signing of its partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), I reflected on the negative multiplier effect that conflict, environmental disasters, and outbreaks have in communities: the systems protecting human life can quickly break down in these conditions, particularly access to safe water, sanitation, hygiene, and healthcare. However, the alternative is also true: investments in robust sanitation economies can not only address the impact on children's lives every day, but also build resilience in communities in the face of crisis when handwashing and safe sanitation become even more critical to protecting public health. Behaviours and infrastructure for safe sanitation and hygiene cannot simply be switched on in a crisis - they depend on an established ecosystem: awareness of practical solutions that communities can purchase locally and want to use. No single organisation can build markets in isolation. Tackling a crisis of this magnitude demands collaboration: bringing together private-sector innovation, public-sector trust and scale, and the expertise of local organisations working within communities. Its JICA partnership is more than just a commitment to expand access to safe toilets and handwashing facilities, it is in a shared desire to build sustainable sanitation and hygiene markets that work for homes, schools, healthcare facilities, and refugee sites across all communities. JICA's development expertise and relationships with governments complement LIXIL's product innovation through SATO to empower African communities to create their own sanitation economy where affordable products are readily available, and consumers are aware and have the dignity of choice to invest in solutions that they want and that benefit their home or community. Malawi24 has already seen what this can achieve in Malawi where LIXIL partnered with Water For People and Phalombe Hardware to improve the lives of more than 100,000 people[[3]]. Rather than simply introducing SATO products, Malawi24 worked with local partners to address affordability, access to stock, and community demand; the foundations of a functioning local market. Using products supplied through its manufacturing hub in Tanzania, Malawi24 helped establish a revolving financing mechanism and worked with local savings and credit organisations to enable entrepreneurs to purchase stock. Alongside NGOs and local government, Malawi24 also supported campaigns to build awareness and demand. The results speak for themselves. From an initial supply of 10,000 units, more than 18,500 additional units have been reordered. Entrepreneurs have grown their businesses, households have greater choice, and a sustainable market has begun to take shape. In the Kenyan Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee settlements and surrounding communities, sanitation and hygiene are also closely connected to public health, resilience, and self-reliance. Building on its existing work there, its partnership with JICA can help align practical solutions and local partnerships with the Kenyan Government's Shirika Plan, a policy aiming to enable refugees to participate in economic and social activities. A toilet or tap alone cannot create refugee self-reliance in the same way that one project cannot guarantee access to safe, affordable sanitation. But together, public policy, product innovation, and partnerships on the ground can create a strong ecosystem that enables long-term benefits in health and economic growth. Innovation and the private sector must sit within a wider system. Products need supply chains, communities need awareness and trust, entrepreneurs need opportunities, and governments need partners that support their priorities and accelerate progress. Having already improved sanitation for more than 100 million people, Malawi24 is now working towards reaching 100 million more by FY2031, expanding its work with JICA in countries including Kenya and Malawi. Investments today should not be about one-off projects or specific emergency interventions, but investments in building local markets supported by governments, NGOs, businesses, entrepreneurs, and communities themselves to improve dignity and economic empowerment in everyday lives and strengthen resilience before the next crisis begins. *Erin McCusker is Executive Officer, Executive Vice President and Chief Impact Officer at LIXIL Corporation, where she leads communications, external affairs and impact strategy. Closing the loop: pioneering horizontal recycling in construction. In the construction sector, the end of a building's life has traditionally been seen as the end of its materials' utility. Now, LIXIL Corporation is changing that narrative. Instead of eventually becoming waste, its own built environment can become a new resource. LIXIL and Toda Corporation are taking a critical step toward making that a reality through a pioneering horizontal recycling partnership. By recovering scrap aluminum from Toda's demolished buildings and transforming it into its recycled low-carbon aluminum PremiAL, LIXIL Corporation is closing the loop on construction waste to create high-performance materials for the structures of tomorrow. Environmental challenges and business growth don't have to be at odds - they can be integrated into a scalable solution that can become a blueprint for cities worldwide. Watch the full video to get a behind-the-scenes look at this latest PremiAL milestone.
JICA and LIXIL partner to launch "Sanitation Economy" in Africa, targeting 500,000 people. 11th June 2026 Sanitation Economy: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and LIXIL Corporation (LIXIL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to accelerate global access to safe sanitation and hygiene. This public-private partnership aims to reach 500,000 people across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia by fostering a self-sustaining "Sanitation Economy." The global sanitation crisis remains a critical development challenge, impacting health, education, and economic stability. Diarrheal diseases linked to poor hygiene claim the lives of approximately 440,000 children annually. As climate change increases the frequency of natural disasters, the need for resilient, localized infrastructure is urgent. A new model for sustainable change. This partnership bridges JICA's institutional expertise with LIXIL's SATO business model, which provides affordable, accessible sanitation solutions. Moving beyond traditional aid, the initiative focuses on creating local ecosystems, encompassing manufacturing, sales, and maintenance, that empower communities to sustain their own facilities. "Global challenges surrounding water and sanitation remain severe, and many people still lack access to safe sanitation and hygiene services. It has also become clear that simply building facilities does not ensure that hygiene practices take root, " commented Akihiko Tanaka, President of JICA, highlighting the urgent need to create mechanisms that function sustainably on the ground. "This partnership with LIXIL brings together JICA's strengths in institutional development and government cooperation with LIXIL's expertise in product development, market creation, and field-level business expansion. By doing so, we aim to move beyond conventional aid and realize a 'Sanitation Economy' where sanitation services circulate autonomously. By accumulating concrete achievements on the ground, starting with Kenya and Malawi, we will deliver sustainable changes to the lives of people in developing countries as a model for Japanese public-private partnership." "Globally, approximately 3.4 billion people still lack access to safely managed sanitation," added Kinya Seto, President and CEO of LIXIL. "LIXIL has set a goal to improve sanitation and hygiene for the 'next 100 million people' by the fiscal year ending March 2031. To address complex and profound global challenges, including sanitation access, refugee self-reliance, and climate change, we must further accelerate the creation of a market-driven 'Sanitation Economy' that grows autonomously on the ground, leveraging this new public-private partnership with JICA and national governments." Initial focus: Kenya and Malawi. The partnership will launch in Kenya and Malawi, targeting homes, schools, and healthcare facilities: * Kenya: In collaboration with the Kenyan government's "Shirika Plan," the initiative will support refugee self-reliance in the Kakuma region by integrating JICA's water infrastructure with LIXIL's SATO products. * Malawi: The partnership will focus on climate-resilient water and sanitation systems capable of withstanding natural disasters. This initiative does more than solve local challenges; it contributes to global health and stability while demonstrating the impact of Japanese corporate technology and expertise in sustainable development. 689,750 Fans Like 7,120 Followers Follow 8,481 Followers Follow 10,112 Followers Follow
