Lithos Carbon converts farmland into carbon sinks by applying crushed basalt to soil. The basalt undergoes natural rock weathering, capturing CO2 from the atmosphere (up to 1 ton CO2 per 3 tons basalt). The company's software optimizes basalt application to maximize both carbon capture and crop yields. It covers feedstock delivery, soil sampling, and application costs, offering farmers a hassle-free experience while unlocking revenue from carbon-removal credits. In addition to carbon capture, basalt improves soil health by regulating pH and replenishing nutrients, and the silicon in basalt increases drought resistance and pest protection. Lithos integrates research-backed modeling to measure carbon capture from farms to the ocean, drawing on Yale and Georgia Tech work. Overall, Lithos provides a sustainable farming solution that boosts productivity and creates carbon credits by turning farmland into efficient carbon sinks.

Climeworks and Lithos Carbon team up to bring verified ERW credits to market. March 25, 2026 Climeworks has partnered with Lithos Carbon in a new collaboration that will bring verified and durable enhanced rock weathering (ERW) credits to the carbon market. Through this partnership, the two companies aim to expand the carbon dioxide removal (CDR) market with solutions for lasting climate impact, while also supporting the further development and scaling of ERW. As a company specializing in ERW, Lithos Carbon runs projects in the United States that spread finely ground basalt rocks on croplands. This practice speeds up the weathering process, helping lock away atmospheric CO2 emissions for over 1,000 years. To source the basalt rock material, Lithos partners with quarries that provide the company with volcanic rock that then gets applied to local crop fields. Its science-based approach includes measuring the achieved weathering signal through sampling and analysis. Lithos combines novel soil models and machine learning to maximize the carbon dioxide removal impact while also boosting crop growth and supporting the work of farmers. Founded in 2022, Lithos has already established itself as one of the leading ERW companies on the market, becoming the largest ERW developer by issued credits in 2025. Towards the end of last year, Lithnos made news with the world's largest ERW delivery to date, issuing a notable 5,160 registry-certified tons of ERW carbon dioxide removal. This achievement demonstrated the company's ability to execute ERW at scale while maintaining the highest standards of scientific rigor and verification. Its newly announced partnership with Climeworks builds on a long-standing working relationship between the two companies, launched back in 2023, when both partners joined forces in an agreement for the delivery of 3.5 million tons of carbon removal credits over more than a decade. Climeworks, on the other hand, is a renowned trailblazer in the carbon removal industry that has also emerged as the single largest offtaker in the category of ERW credits. Together, Climeworks and Lithos will support the removal of atmospheric CO2 from the atmosphere with ERW, while building climate resilience in farmers and enriching the carbon market with high-quality ERW credits.
