Lowe's stock trades 27% below peak as DIY demand weakens despite strong cash flow

Lowe's Companies shares have fallen 27% from their 52-week high, trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 17.6 versus the S&P 500 median of 24.4. The home improvement retailer remains profitable with healthy cash flow metrics, including an 11.1% operating cash flow margin and 6.5% free cash flow yield. Revenue grew 6.2% over the last 12 months, with online sales up 15.5% in the most recent quarter. However, operating margin contracted by 0.8 percentage points, and comparable transactions declined 0.9% despite a 1.5% increase in average ticket. The discount reflects investor concerns about weakening DIY demand and a challenging housing environment. Growth now depends on higher prices across fewer transactions, raising questions about underlying business strength.

Lowe's paid out $47B to shareholders while stock returned just 16.7% over five years

Lowe's Companies distributed $47 billion to shareholders over five years through buybacks and dividends, representing 41% of its current market capitalisation. Despite this massive cash return—$35 billion in share repurchases and $12 billion in dividends—the stock gained only 16.7% over the period, whilst the S&P 500 returned 84%. The home improvement retailer generated $88.44 billion in revenue over the past twelve months and posted positive comparable sales for four consecutive quarters. Management attributes performance to its "Total Home strategy", with online sales growing 15.5% in the most recent quarter. However, DIY demand remains pressured in a challenging housing environment. Big-ticket discretionary projects, comprising one-third of the business, face particular weakness. The company's three-year average annual revenue growth stands at -2.4%.

Lowe's opens 95,000 sq ft Texas store with AI assistant and redesigned kitchen showroom

Lowe's plans to open a new store in Kaufman, Texas, in early August at 600 Kings Fort Parkway. The 95,000-square-foot location includes a 30,000-square-foot outdoor garden area. The store will feature a redesigned kitchen showroom with larger product displays and interactive elements including QR codes linking to style quizzes and 3D visualizers. Digital paint kiosks will allow customers to order paint without queuing. This marks the eighth Lowe's store to open in Texas over the past year and the fifth in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area since early 2025. The company hopes to hire more than 100 people for full and part-time positions. The North Carolina-based retailer operates over 1,750 home improvement stores and 120 distribution centres.

Home Depot and Lowe's revenue trends reveal market dominance and valuation shifts

Home Depot and Lowe's, the two major US home improvement retailers, continue to show divergent revenue scales. Home Depot reported $41.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ended May 2026, whilst Lowe's recorded $23.1 billion for the same period. Home Depot maintains its dominant position, benefiting from its professional contractor customer base, which contributes approximately half its sales. The company reported a 12% EBIT margin for its latest quarter and announced a strategic partnership with Hertz to benefit military personnel. Lowe's recorded a 33% gross margin for its quarter ended May 2026, though the company completed a permanent workforce reduction at its North Carolina facilities in early 2026. Both retailers faced share price pressure from interest rate headwinds and a soft housing market, with Home Depot shares dropping to $289.10 and Lowe's to $203.40 during the period.

Lowe's outpaces Floor & Decor with 8% sales growth and lower valuation for 2026

Lowe's is positioned as the better buy for 2026 compared to Floor & Decor, according to a stock comparison analysis. Lowe's expects sales to grow 8% and net income by 2.5% this year, whilst Floor & Decor anticipates a 3% sales increase with slightly declining net income. Lowe's generated approximately $86.3 billion in revenue for FY 2025, up 3.1% year over year, with net income of nearly $6.7 billion. Floor & Decor posted revenue of nearly $4.7 billion, reflecting 4% growth, with net income close to $209 million. Both retailers face headwinds from interest rate volatility and soft home sales. However, Lowe's appears more attractively priced based on future earnings estimates, whilst Floor & Decor trades at a premium reflecting its specialised niche. Lowe's is rolling out AI-assisted tools for contractors and focusing on improving customer experience, which drove first-quarter 2026 sales up 10%.
