m13

Early-stage VC backing AI and Web3

Overview

M13 backs early-stage software startups, focusing on seed and Series A investments, especially in AI and web3-enabled consumer tech. The firm uses its Propulsion model to deliver strategic and operational guidance from a team of experienced executives, providing hands-on support to help portfolio companies scale. By combining venture capital with elements of private equity, M13 aims to be a long-term partner rather than just a funder. With offices in Los Angeles and New York and funds including a $400 million vehicle, its goal is to help founders build durable, growth-focused businesses in areas like the future of work, health, commerce, and money.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • M13 backed Jimini Health's $17 million seed round in 2026, riding AI mental-health demand.
  • M13 led Rime's Series A on July 15, 2026, targeting enterprise voice AI.
  • M13's site added OpenFX, Teleskope, and Makora in July 2026, showing active deployment.

What critics are saying

  • M13 remains tied to crowded seed AI markets where follow-on capital tightened in 2026.
  • Consumer-focused bets like dating, music, and commerce face fast product commoditization.
  • If AI incumbents replicate portfolio features, M13 becomes a generic early-stage capital provider.

What makes m13 unique

  • M13's Propulsion model pairs seed checks with hands-on operators across product, hiring, and GTM.
  • Its July 2026 portfolio centers on AI, health, commerce, and infrastructure, not broad software.
  • M13 shows repeat founder access: 54 exits and 15 unicorns from seed or Series A.

For the first time in human history, a rich understanding of language is available as a utility, delivered via API, useful enough to “be metered”. Intelligence has become a tool: something you can call, compose, and build on, divorced from any individual human mind.

Ex-Glossier execs raise $7M from Equal Ventures to build AI operating brain for commerce brands

Chord, an AI platform for commerce operations founded by ex-Glossier executives Bryan Mahoney and Henry Davis, has raised $7 million in funding led by Equal Ventures, bringing total capital raised to $45 million. M13, Chingona Ventures and CEAS Investments also participated. The New York-based startup, founded in 2021, is building a "context layer" that unifies a company's data, rules and operational logic to enable real-time decision-making. Its "context graph" stores metrics, constraints and past decisions, becoming more accurate over time. Chord's customers include MrBeast, Ritual, Ruggable and Blue Bottle Coffee, collectively representing over $1 billion in annual revenue. The platform competes with Klaviyo, Triple Whale and Northbeam. The funding will accelerate agent infrastructure development and sales amongst commerce businesses generating between $20 million and $1 billion revenue.
