Over 20 years ago, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Akamai Technologies set out to solve some of the toughest challenges of making the “World Wide Web” a platform that could serve billions of humans around the world. To embody this mission, the company eventually rolled out the Akamai platform in 1999, which was edge computing in its earliest form (content delivery network or CDN), even before the advent of virtualization, and remains one of the most critical infrastructures for security and performance, underpinning the web as we know it today
Macrometa raises funding, partners with Akamai on edge computing solutions - SiliconANGLE
Edge computing cloud and global data network Macrometa has raised $38 million led by Akamai Technologies, as the two announce a new partnership and product integrations. The funding also included participation from Shasta Ventures and 60 Degree Capital. Akamai Labs CTO Andy Champagne will join Macrometa’s board. Macrometa founder and CEO Chetan Venkatesh told TechCrunch that its GDN enables cloud developers to run backend services closer to mobile phones, browsers, smart appliances, connected cars and users in edge regions, or points of presence (PoP). That reduces outages because if one edge region goes down, another one can take over instantly. Akamai’s edge network, meanwhile, covers 4,200 regions around the world
SAN MATEO, Calif., Sept. 14, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Macrometa Corporation , the first-of-its-kind Global Data Network (GDN) and edge computing platform, today announced a strategic partnership with DevCycle , the leader in innovative feature flagging solutions. This partnership enables DevCycle to launch Edge Flags , the world's first ultra low latency global feature flags solution from the edge built on Macrometa's Global Data Network. "The Macrometa platform enables DevCycle to take the Edge Flags solution to the ultimate level of performance and user experience. We think it will revolutionize the way feature flags are used by developers to build serverless apps in the cloud and the edge," said Aaron Glazer, CEO of DevCycle. "Data can now be saved as soon as it's available and accessed by lightning-fast APIs to make near-instantaneous flagging decisions. All engineers need to leverage that data is a simple User ID – this level of simplicity is unheard of. Feature flags have never been real time or this fast and seamless until now."

Reserve your free pass now!. I recently heard the phrase, “One second to a human is fine – to a machine, it’s an eternity.” It made me reflect on the profound importance of data speed. Not just from a philosophical standpoint but a practical one. Users don’t much care how far data has to travel, just that it gets there fast. In event processing, the rate of speed for data to be ingested, processed and analyzed is almost imperceptible. Data speed also affects data quality
